Ethnography is the study of people in their environment through the use of methods such as participant observation and face-to-face interviewing. I had to observe people on the middle floor of the MUC, by Starbucks and Aunt Anne’s. I watched how people would interact with each other and for how long, would they sit, eat, and chat or get their food and go, what were their actions when they first walked through the door, and were they on their cellular devices. As I sat there and viewed people’s interactions, I didn’t have any particular questions besides their next move.
I could tell some people were going to class and coming from their classes. Some would stand for 1-2 minutes chatting with their friends. I observed large groups of friends playing in the middle of the walkway, loudly. Others would get their food and go where they’re headed. There were a lot of interactions that I myself also make daily going to and from classes, or even just to the gym or events. There were also a lot of people wearing business clothes like suits and tie.
The women would wear heels and a suit or some form of formal apparel. Some would take a break and sit on the coaches by the door. There was a lot of different interactions. The environment was loud and had a lot of interactions going on. It’s like the main area where people come and go.
