In Codes 123 we have recently been learning about data. How to clean data, how to use data, and different ways to find data. I feel like data is important because it helps us be informed of problems and solve them. There are many challenges that people may face when working with data including accuracy, maintaining the privacy of data, and sometimes being very stressful.
In class, we had to find our own data source and chose to go with “Hate Crime 2017” because It would be nice to know about hate crimes and how much changed over time. The police department of St. Louis Missouri created this database they help keep track of every year of Hate crime to see if the problems increase or decrease depending on the year it also logs the offender’s race, the location where the offense was held, and many other things. We can use this data set to compare and contrast a little bit to see what people can do to try to not increase Hate crimes.
When looking at the year 2018 there were only 2 hate crimes, when looking at the database in 2019 I see that the amount of hate crimes began to rise and I am also seeing more offenders who are 18 and younger rather when looking at 2017 there were NONE.
When it comes to data sorting and cleaning I feel like this data set was good and the police department is doing a good job on their end, It helps them keep track of how many hate crimes go on and what kinds of people or committing them. They made sure to keep raw data in the set, I feel like it shows people that they do keep track and it shows how they are helping the community by having these published to the public and also so people can do their own research if needed.
I might use the data to examine a little more I would put all of the years together to see what year was actually the worst year and which kind of people are known for committing these kinds of crimes I would also figure out how to try and decrease the number of hate crimes.
