Source Date:

Source Type: Ted Talk

Summary:

This source talked about gentrification and how physical space affects people. The speaker in the video mentioned how gentrification can bring both positive and negative changes to neighborhoods. Gentrification can lead to improved infrastructure, increased property values, and new business opportunities, but on the flip side it can also lead to higher living costs, loss of community identity, and the displacement of long-time residents. The speaker voiced that through gentrification they were “building on broken promises” by making the area “pretty” but not taking into account how it was affecting the current residents of the area and what their needs are. This source expresses the importance of listening to everyone and making sure that all stakeholders are accounted for and considered when trying to make improvements.

Analysis:

This source is significant to our research because we are also having to consider spatial justice and stories from the community. In this instance we are outsiders trying to address and fix an inside problem. It is our job to make sure that in the midst of improving the issue at hand we are acknowledging the previous wrong as well as hearing out the voices of the community so that effective progress is made. We can also take from this source the concept of getting feedback from community to avoid pushback.
