Reflection #1

So far, planning the products for our group project has gone okay. Some of us were a bit confused at first about what we had to do, but once we understood it, we easily came up with ideas. Adrienne Maree Brown’s Emergent Strategy can help by allowing us to open our minds and think my thoroughly about the topics we want to cover.

Reflection #2

My life relates to the “land as pedagogy” through my family. My father had lived in Mexico before he had my brother and me. Our cultures are different, and my mom was born in Illinois but in the “country,” as she would say. Everything she learned as a child was mostly because she went out of her way to understand it. An example of this would be she learned how to whistle with a blade of grass, she then passed this knowledge down to my siblings and me. My father has learned many things in Mexico that he has also passed down to me and my siblings. Specifically, my father taught us a lot about Mexican culture, and he still teaches us to this day if we have connections. Each of their knowledge about the world has been passed down to us, which also broadens our knowledge.

Reflection #3

Out of the five principles given by Stanford Social Innovation Review, the one I have used the most in my past semesters would be “Principle #1: Join the community”. I say this because of the mentoring we did in the spring of 2024. In previous semesters, we researched dropout rates in the Alton High School community, which resulted in us forming our mentorship program. We based the program in Alton at the Boys and Girls Club, which were usually high schoolers. We then put our experience, as well as research, together to present what we had done and found. We hoped our research and work could show our audience that we were trying to better the system in a way we could. As for today, I would say I probably use “Principle #2: Communicate in images” the most. I saw this because I’m currently not too involved in the community, but I do tell stories about what I’ve done that I hope people can picture in their minds.

Reflection #4

The audience for my first product would be those wanting to be a mentee, and for my second product, the audience would be those who are looking to start a mentorship program of their own. The age I would say for this audience would be high school students and college students. The information that will be given throughout the products will catch the attention of the audience, as well as the imagery I will be applying. Many individuals like seeing things that are appealing but also have the information needed to achieve what they are looking for. For my poster, the aesthetic and colors would help draw in an audience while also giving basic information they will need. The video gives a cool design of whiteboard editing while also being educational, which many enjoy. I think going further, I will have to work on the information being given because although this age group needs the information, they don’t want to have a lot to read. I will need to work on not putting too much information into my products so it isn’t too overwhelming with information.
