I spent the summer of 2026 working for a small commercial construction company. They were a smaller general contractor compared to the companies in STL, however the work that was done was the exact same as a bigger company. I worked full 40 hour weeks which allowed me to gain the knowledge and experience that I am going to need later when I get a full-time job.
I worked on my old high school building. They were adding a new gym, which consisted of a basketball court with stadium seating on the first floor. The second floor consisted of an indoor track. The third floor was a weight room and viewing room of the basketball court. That was the biggest project that I worked on covering about 24 million dollars with all of the work.
I would go to a lot of pre-bid meetings which sent me to different job sites that were about to have work on them. Brockmiller was bidding on private airport in Perryville Missouri which was needing hangers demolished and redone. Another pre-bid meeting that I attended was at SEMO, this meeting was about the two water fountains that had the SEMO logo around them. The owners wanted to have new bricks installed because of deterioration from time and water.
Another task that I was set with was doing takeoffs on a school building. The project manager that I was shadowing also did the takeoff just in case I was doing something wrong. I spent most of my day figuring out the takeoff for the rebar and concrete structures that were needed for the building. The takeoffs that I had done in class were on a computer application, but when I was working it was on something called green sheets.
