Social Degrees Being Doubted

(By: https://www.ccis.edu/commencement)

I am a Public Relation major with a minor in Sociology. I can’t tell you how many times I have been ridiculed or judged for my major. Things like, “It’s easy” or, “I’m only struggling because my major’s hard”. Well I really wanted to break this down and rant about why this might be.

First I thought it was projection because they were not doing as well in their courses. Then I thought to myself, “If they picked that major, shouldn’t their academics reflect the skill level of the major?”. That’s when I realized that people have different reasons for picking their major, but for the people that come after you for your major. Relax! In my opinion, people who have a social degree always end up with a job.

Another critique is the difficulty of the major. If you don’t like to sleep then it’s really easy! I’ve been on about 30 hours of sleep this past week and it’s honestly hell that you can’t miss a deadline. I wish I could study for a test and go to sleep but I have to write 2,000 words every week! The deadlines are different so it’s very difficult to keep track of the due dates and assignments. Imagine doing all of this and barely sleeping, just for someone to tell you that your major is easy. I wanted to write this for anyone who has heard something along these lines and has felt talked down upon for your passion. You’re not alone and no, your major is not easy!

Might I say I love your opinion. I have has so many people poke fun at my major since I am mass Communications and it always made me feel like I wasn’t “smart enough” since I wasn’t pursuing a degree that was stem based. But the more that I progress into my degree, the more that I realize that it doesn’t truly matter what other people think about your field of study. What matters most is that you are confident in the decision that you made and will be happy with the major that you have chosen.
