TED Talk week 9

After reviewing the background and scientific work of Ayana Johnson, write a reflection on what you discovered. You might wish to address some of the following:

1. What was most interesting to you in reviewing these resources?

“We can’t all just talk about it”(Elizabeth Johnson). This quote comes from a point in her TED talk about the difference between saying and doing. She mentions that people are posting their venn diagrams on social media and most are coming to the conclusion to just “communicate about climate”. This is a complication because if we are all just talking about it , then who’s going to do it. She then states the things we need to get action implemented like green building retrofitters, mutual aid organizers, and city council members. These people would and are in position to make a real difference, we just need more.

2. What did you learn from these resources about ocean conservation?

I didn’t learn much about ocean conservation from these sources specifically but, I scrolled down to the button of the article and found the Ocean Urban Lab website. After clicking this link I found a lot of information and facts about ocean conservation. One example from the website is that, “More than 65 million people live in U.S. coastal cities, of which nearly 60% are people of color. The coastal economy supports 58.3 million jobs and contributes $9.5 trillion to our total GDP, and the ocean has the potential to provide up to 35% of the climate solutions we need. We are unprepared for rising seas and storms, and historically disadvantaged communities are often hit first and worst. Our safety, communities, cultures, and economies are at risk.”(https://urbanoceanlab.org).

3. What new questions do you have after reviewing these resources?

When are we going to start taking polution seriously?

4. What do these resources tell you about the types of people that do science?

“Scientists tend to be predominantly investigative individuals, which means that they are quite inquisitive and curious people that often like to spend time alone with their thoughts. They also tend to be artistic, meaning that they are creative and original and work well in a setting that allows for self-expression.”(careerexplorer.com).
