Goals

Majors:

I’m currently Undecided on my major, but I’m thinking about going into Business-Marketing, and Mass Communications-Strategic Media. I feel like these two both align closely with my interests and what I see myself doing in the future. The problem is knowing if I should double major in both, or just go after one.

Career Interests:

As of now, my goal is to eventually work with Nike and become their Marketing and Design Executive. The marketing education side of my major would be significant for this position considering it’s literally in the name. However, with a having a position this respected, I’d like to further my chances of getting it by also being educated in something else, like Mass Communications. A specialization in Strategic Media would especially help me stand out because I’d know how to market a product, and to whom. That’s why both majors might be important for me to better my chances of getting the title.

Courses Completed:

  1. Succeeding and Engaging at SIUE (FST 101): I found this class kind of boring. I learned about the basic things to know about being a college student, specifically at SIUE (shocker).
  2. College Finances and Resources (UNIV 113): This class taught me a little more about being financially literate and knowing what to pay attention to with things related to money.
  3. Introduction to Sociology (SOC 111): I really liked this class and being able learn about why some things are the way that they are in society.
  4. Computer Concepts and Applications (CMIS 108): I also enjoyed this class. It was fun brushing up on some of my hard skills and learning new techniques that businesses might find appealing when searching for candidates.
  5. Physical Geography (GEOG 210): Honestly this was an easy A. It was challenging at some points because I wasn’t familiar with some aspects of the Earth, but the professor was great at teaching and I managed to do good and learn a few things.
  6. Mass Media in Society (MC 201): This class was boring. It felt like I was learning things that were pretty obvious. Although I might not have remembered some definitions and who invented what forms of communication, the assignments weren’t that bad in turns of interest.
  7. Research Team 1 (CODE 120): I love my research team, and our community partner. I think we all work great together and are honest with the things we are hoping to accomplish.
  8. Transdisciplinary Communications (CODE 121): This class wasn’t too bad. When we started reading about a hurricane and how it impacted a fictional community I think it made us more engaged with the class.
  9. Fundamentals of Financial Accounting (ACCT 200): This class is pretty difficult and hard to understand. It feels really fast paced and I can’t seem to remember how to close accounts, and decide which accounts to put money in. 4/10.
  10. Principles of Microeconomics (ECON 112): I’m surprised to say that this class isn’t all too difficult. Of course I need to study for my exams so I don’t forget about the different types of curves, or market systems, but overall it’s a little interesting once you figure out what you’re learning.
  11. Writing for the Media (MC 202): This MC class is better than the last one, but it’s still a little boring. Once we get to the advertising portion of the class, hopefully it’ll get more interesting, but for now I’ll continue learning about Journalism.
  12. Research Team 2 (CODE 122): Again, this class is my favorite. I feel safe here and awake because we do things more hands on. It’s a fun time to collaborate with one another and share our thoughts about mentoring.
  13. Research and Systems Thinking (CODE 123): I honestly have no idea what we’re learning. It’s all so very boring. I can’t focus because I don’t feel engaged. I know we’re learning about research methods and such, but why should I care how to use them when it’s pretty self explanatory?

Future Courses:

I don’t know what I’ll be taking for the Spring semester of ’24, but I can share what I’ll be doing for the Fall of ’23.

  1. MC 204: Hopefully this class will really be hands on, and we can learn how to make good video’s. As long as I have a good instructor I should be fine with knowing how to use editing software.
  2. MS 250: Honestly I’m kind of intimidated by this class. I’m afraid I’ll be being taught math that I’ve never seen before and I’ll need to teach myself. My worst fear is not being taught the math and the instructor assumes we all know how to do the stuff on the board.
  3. MC 325: I really have high expectations for this class. It’s apparently more marketing and advertising based so I’m hoping I’ll get a little more insight about what my future would look like if I go into marketing and advertisement.
  4. CODE 220: The bar is really low with this class. I really just want a CODES class that I’m excited to go to, and one that will be interesting and engaging and the professor knows how exactly to share that information with the class. I hope whoever they are they can understand the position their students are in.
