Your Goal Grade
Highlight the header for the column below to indicate which grade you plan to work toward in the course. Meeting the basic requirements for your chosen letter grade, according to the table below, is mandatory.
A Work | B Work | C Work |
-Misses one class or less, or completes make-up work for excused absences -Annotates all readings thoroughly -Makes substantive comments in discussions -Completes all assignments on time (or has an approved extension request) -Work demonstrates intellectual engagement, care, effort, and growth in response to feedback -Collaborates substantially, contributes to vision, works equally with peers | -Misses two classes or less, or completes make-up work for excused absences -Annotates readings -Often participates in discussion -Completes all major assignments on time (or has an approved extension request) -Completes most SAs on time -Work demonstrates care, effort and growth in response to feedback -Collaborates equally, completes required work | -Misses three classes or less, or completes make-up work for excused absences -Completes most readings -Sometimes adds to discussion -Completes all major assignments on time (or has an approved extension request) -Completes at least four SAs -Meets minimal expectations on assignments; shows limited growth in response to feedback -Completes required collaborative work |
Introduction
Goal 1
(20%) 8) Oral Communication B.) Uses compelling, appropriate delivery techniques.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
– Having this as my goal with help me communicate better with my peers and give a better understanding. Participating in class discussion and being engaged with my peers will help me better these skills | -Presentation -Experimental Design -5 ideas for your project – Annotated Bibliography | Showing that I learned these skills will be things like how I present information during presentations. Giving a better understanding of the topic. Showing that I’m actively participating in my group can also show this goal. |
5 Ideas for your project (5%)

I used this as evidence to show the communication between my partner (Keith) and me. Earlier this semester, we were having problems finding our last 2 research questions. At the end, we came to a compromise and decided to talk to the professor about the assignment.
Annotated bibliography (5%)

This is used as evidence because, in class, we discussed the final information we were using for the bibliography. Specifically, we discussed what sights would be best to address each of the articles/papers that were needed. This shows how we used the correct techniques.
Goal 2
(20%) 9) Problem-Solving Skills B.) Identifies and evaluate multiple approaches for solving problems.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
Looking at a problem outside the box can always give you a different solution. I feel that this goal will challenge me to stay disciplined and look for other ways to solve problems. | -project ideas -10 research paper Citations – Final Project -Experimental Design | Things showing that I understand this goal would be suggesting multiple solutions to a discussion. Even when the options are narrow, I could find another way to solve the problem. |
Project Ideas (5%)

I am using this as evidence because this was the final question we came up with when we couldn’t find another research question. My partner and I talked about the different things going on in Cahokia Heights, and water infrastructure was the common issue. We experimented with different keywords until our final results.
10 research papers citations (5%)

I am using this as evidence because we had to evaluate and choose the best article for future assignments. For example, the annotated bibliography needed key articles for specific types of papers.
Goal 3
(20%)
(11) Reading C.) Reads using an appropriate lens and can engage in a continuing dialogue within and beyond a discipline or a community of readers.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
Giving understanding inside of class and seeing different views can make a better student. I chose this goal because it can help me participate better in discussions. | -reading reflection -annotated bibliography – final research paper -science spotlight | Showing that I learned and maintained this skill will be participating in class discussions. Even talking to my partner can lead to better understanding. |
Reading Reflection#3 (5%)

This is evidence because after reading Braiding Sweetgrass, we talked about the relationship between us and the earth. Furthering our understanding of each other through the process while writing the reflection.
Scientific spotlight (5%)

This is my evidence because we talked about the scientific spotlight in class with my peers. I further explained my thought process and my own question about a scientific study on the relationships of birds.
Annotated bibliography (5%)

This is evidence because my partner, Keith, and I went over the articles and talked about what would make good papers. Each article leads to good information to support our hypothesis and research questions.
Goal 4
(20%)
7) Skills for Lifelong Learning B.) Pursues knowledge and educational experience beyond the classroom.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
Doing research will always help you learn something outside of class. Taking time to see the why or the cause behind something can always give you better information. Backing up information can also further this ideal of research | – final research paper -final presentation – reading Reflections – Science spotlight | Showing I met this goal would reflect my overall standing in this class. Doing research outside of class and verifying information will show the pursuit and discipline I have for knowledge. |
Science spotlight (5%)

This is evidence because it led to my curiosity about race theory and the dynamic of racism we have to face. Being a black man myself, I have been learning about inequality since 8th grade. This science spotlight opens and creates a space to talk about these things.
Reading Reflection#5 (5%)

This is evidence because, outside of talking about this in class, I reflected on different things I used for shortcuts. The way I finish work, cleaning up, or coming back home are examples of shortcuts I take. This could be videos on how to find articles faster, saving time with citations, or summarizing an article with keypoints.
Goal 5
(20%)
5) Information Literacy B. Accesses information using effective, well-designed search strategies and appropriate sources.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
Bettering this skill requires the effort that is put into citations and the information you are looking for. Not only that, but I would have to have good strategies | -10 research paper citations – Final presentation -Final Research Papers -Annotated bibliography | My final papers in the class should show this goal and give a good understanding of my research. Having good citations and the valid information needed can make or break a paper. Even with other assignments I want to have a very active search strategy. |
10 research paper citations (5%)

These 2 citations are examples of how I searched for articles. Using browsers like Google Scholar also helped me break down the difference between review and research articles.
Annotated bibliography (5%)

This is evidence because of the different assignments earlier this semester that led up to finding this information. Some of the articles I found lack the information needed to back up my research question. While losing a site may suck, finding a site with backup information is way better for a stronger foundation.
