First-Week Introduction

This year in CODES, I want to stay diligent and focused on my work. I don’t want to waste my time, but I want to be on top of all my assignments. Last semester, I struggled with not communicating with my professors when I needed extra time or if I was having a hard time. The goals I chose would help me better not only my skills independently but my skill when it comes to working with groups. I am very excited about the Scrollytelling & the potential growth opportunities with the group I will be working with. This may be exciting, but it will most likely be one of the most challenging assignments this semester.

Midterm Introduction

Over the first half of this semester, I had a lot of challenges along the way. If it wasn’t my personal life, a lot was happening while on campus. Even with these challenges I overcame these difficulties and made the best of it. CODES kept me engaged in many different ways and helped me better my understanding of working with a team. With the survey, there were many challenges we faced but it all worked out in the end. I want to finish this semester off strong for not only myself but with my team to accomplish our goal.

Final Introduction

With the second semester coming to an end, I feel that I did very well this year. It was a lot of trials and tribulations along the way, and mental battles I faced. It wasn’t really the work holding me back, but how I dealt with these situations. CODES have taught me not only skills needed in the classroom, but also all around my different parts of life. I remained disciplined with my work effort and made a way for new learning opportunities. In the future, I told myself to make sure I kept consistent with communication with my professors. This semester, I did pretty well with communicating and finishing my work promptly.

Course Goals

Choose five goals from the CODES Student Learning Outcomes that you’d like to work toward. Choose goals that are relevant to the scope of this course, select artifacts/examples based on activities assigned for this course, and explain characteristics in a way that illustrates how your artifacts/examples demonstrate your progress toward the goal.

2 B.) Critical & Creative thinking (20%)
Takes risks in assignments and in approaches to learning to create new knowledge.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
When it comes to this goal, I know that I would have to be open-minded when it comes to finding solutions. I also make sure that I am going above the norm for the assignment. Some examples of the assignments I could use are

SA#1

Lab#1

SA#2

ScrollyTelling
With this goal, I would want the efforts and time I took to work on each assignment to show I met this goal. I would also want how I approach each assignment to show that I met my goal

For SA#2 I used this example because sometimes you have to look at the reason why these things matter. It also opens a new opportunity for learning with new experiences. We even talked about our personal views with organizations in these types of communities.

Lab 1 With lab one, we didn’t get any survey responses, but it didn’t stop our efforts to finish our work. I used this example because it opened my eyes to not everything going our way. Sometimes things won’t be straightforward forward and that is completely fine.

SA#1 I used this as an example because I know how people tend to avoid these topics. Not because it’s not helping others, but it isn’t stopping the narrative in poverty areas. It also created space for deeper conversation in the classroom.

Scrollytelly Although we didn’t get to the scrollytelly, the evidence would have backed up our different methods. We share the story like others, but give a different perspective on the topic.

5 B.) Information Literacy (20%)
Accesses information using effective, well-designed search strategies and appropriate sources.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
This goal revolves around using appropriate searching skills when using information that is needed. When needing information, I will make sure the information is true and valuable to what research I am using. Some examples of the assignments I will use are

Scrollytelling

SA#2

Lab#1

Lab#2
To prove I have met this goal, these assignments will have the correct and appropriate information for the assignment at hand. I also will make sure that when it comes to searching for sources it is relevant to the topic.

When using information, I feel like having the right websites can make a difference compared to just picking the first thing you see. It could also change the quality of the information you processed when supporting what you’re writing about. SA#2 will be the example I’m using.

Lab#1 I used for evidence because we had the right direction when looking for the organization we were reaching out to. Even though we didn’t get anything for our survey, we still brought out valuable information for future projects.

Lab#2 is used as evidence because it required us to get an analysis of the soil in a nearby pond. We used different strategies in finding the soil type, and also went into the pond to look at the pH. balance and water levels. This created new opportunities for learning about our environment, not even another city away.

Scrollytelly, was going to have information surrounding all the effort we put into class. Not only talking about the collaboration with heartlands, but also the hardships along the way with lab#1. Breaking this down it created a new space for discussion, things like why the survey brought so much challenge.

7 B.) Skills for Lifelong Learning (20%)
Pursues knowledge and educational experience beyond the classroom.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
I know inside and outside the classroom I will always be challenged, so getting more knowledge to help prepare myself will lead to my goal. Looking up information or even watching videos could help me better understand the topic at hand. Some assignments I would work with are

SA#3

SA#1

Lab#1

Scrollytelling
Bringing information outside of class that I have found could be a way to show that I understand my goal. Not only that but sharing materials with my group would not only benefit me but everyone around.

SA#3 was used because of the lifelong information you gain from this topic. Not only have I visited the Cahokia Mounds, but I have seen different landmarks that have been here for generations. They left an impact like no other and it is accessible less than 30 minutes away from here.

lab#1 is used as evidence because, we went further than the classroom to look for information. Things like going into the direction of creating space to have more knowledge of water problems. Even though we didn’t get responses on the survey, we still interviewed people locally who seen or lived with water problems.

Lab#2 is used for evidence, because we went and found out more information about soil. Getting down in personal in the environment created a safe and fun space. Learning about the different types of soil and the meaning behind their colors. As seen above this type of soil was pretty good in the environment.

Scrollytelly was going to be used as evidence because we learned a lot about interviewing and cleaning through research. Each process we went through this semester all tested our skills in the scrollytelly. Things like interviewing, transcription, and citing through data.

13 C.) Written Communication (20%)
Uses language to skillfully communicate with clarity and fluency.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
When writing I will make sure I am using the appropriate words and wording when talking about a topic. I will make sure I proofread my work before submitting an assignment and that my words are used the right way. Some examples of this would be

SA#3

Lab#1

SA#4

ScrollyTelling
When reading my assignments they will have understanding and will flow fluently when reading. another way to prove I have met this goal will be my final assignment at the end of the semester.

I used SA#4 for evidence because I lived in parts of the area with bus transportation. In classed, we talked about the different uses of public transportation. I expressed how grateful I was for this ability and wrote how beneficial it was for the whole metro area.

Another piece of evidence would be SA#3, we watched a video about the Cahokia mounds. I feel that it was a good discussion, so I wrote about how it would be in the 21st century. What things would be different, or even if they were as important a landmark as they were back then.

Lab#1 was another piece of evidence I used because during the reflection, we talked about what we took away from this experience. Each Lab had its challenges, and we all made progress through each of them. I talked about how we can use these experiences even when things don’t go our way.

I was going to use the scrollytelly as evidence, because we have plans in the future. It’s not confirmed what we are doing next fall, but the future possibilities caught our attention. I expressed how these possibilities can create a new learning opportunity for my group that we can share for others.

11 C.) Reading (20%)
Reads using an appropriate lens and can engage in a continuing dialogue within and beyond a discipline or a community of readers.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
Reading is a vital thing we need in life, so being able to understand the “why” is very important. I would take my time reading each assignment and taking time to understand the information. Some examples of this would be
SA#1

SA#2

SA#3

SA#4
Reading these articles, my writing will demonstrate that I understand the information that I have processed.

These 2-source analyses were chosen because they both opened my eyes to changing my thought process when writing. I also shared a lot of information with Source Analysis#2/3 and talked about the impact made with grassroots organizations.

The same thing can be said with SA#1 and SA#4. Both of these topics showed that there can be deeper thoughts behind them. These 2-analysis hit home for me since they were so close to home. It showed that there was a lot of work to be done around not only East Saint Louis, but also Centreville and cities facing similar issues. We talked about the positives and negatives of each topic, and they reflected in the work we did in the classroom.
