First-Week Introduction
[Complete the goal-setting portions of your class portfolio by choosing your goals, going over the syllabus in detail, and explaining what assignments you may use to demonstrate how you have been developing in those areas and what will best demonstrate your progress. Then, write a brief introduction here where you explain why you chose your five goals. What assignment makes you most excited for the semester? Which one seems like it will be the most challenging? What strategies do you want to set for yourself to make the semester a success?]
This year in CODES, I aim to remain focused and disciplined with my assignments. In the past, I had a hard time turning in my assignments on time because I would get stuck in my head. A lot of the time it required me to communicate with my professors on the things I was going through mentally. I feel that these skills would help me remain diligent and keep putting my best efforts into my assignments. However, I am excited to start my final project. I don’t know all the details at this moment, but it seems like it’s going to be fairly challenging for the end of this semester.
Midterm Introduction
[Speak about the skills and content you’ve learned during the first half of the semester. What did you most enjoy? What did you struggle with? What goals do you think you’ve most excelled at meeting and what do you want to continue developing during the second half of the semester? What goals haven’t you yet met, and how will you make them a priority in the second half of class?]
Over the first half of this semester, I learned a lot about data and the importance of research. Each assignment not only challenged me but increased my knowledge of each subject. I enjoyed the Top 5 assignments. Reading different chapters from the book or even looking at articles made you think outside the box or even ask things you wouldn’t think about. Something I struggled with was getting my assignments in on time. I would sometimes get caught up in my personal life and sometimes let that affect my effort to finish my assignments. During the second half of the semester, I want to remain discipline with finish my work to the best ability and staying diligent on my assignments.
Final Introduction
[Now that the semester is over, use your introduction to reflect in-depth on your process. How well did you meet the goals you set out to meet? What did you learn that surprised you? Focusing on your goals for this class, what do you want to remember to take with you into your future courses? What strategies can you use to continue developing toward these goals?]
Course Goals
Choose five goals from the CODES Student Learning Outcomes that you’d like to work toward. Choose goals that are relevant to the scope of this course, select artifacts/examples based on activities assigned for this course, and explain characteristics in a way that illustrates how your artifacts/examples demonstrate your progress toward the goal.
12 C.) Collaboration (20%) Works independently toward goals by contributing and meeting deadlines
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
When it comes to this goal working together with my peers is very important. Not only that but holding myself accountable to finish my work is also required of me. So, I will make sure I won’t slack with my assignments when working with a group. | Some examples of the assignments I could use are – Psychology of Groups Top 5 assignment -Final Project -Reflection #2 -Article Annotation Cavazos et al | Showing that I successfully met these goals, would be having my assignments finished on time. Also, the effort I put into making my assignments presentable. |
Psychology of Groups Top 5 Assignment (5%): This assignment opened my eyes to how important groups are in our daily lives. I learned that when working with groups, communication goes a long way, even when taking data by yourself. This goal I choose help me really focus on doing my part for my assignment.

This example shows my knowledge and understanding of working with groups. Knowing how important each player is on this part of the team can really improve our work effort.
Reflection 2 (5%) I can say the same thing, when talking about data cleansing it’s a lot of parts that have to work together. All the different information presented in surveys can’t just be sent out but observed and carefully redirected. Not only that but making sure your part is updated along with everyone else can make a difference.

With this example, we all play a part in how our research is done and understand its importance. Data cleaning isn’t done by one person, but many people and it takes some time for a village to get this information processed. Knowing this information, working on the final project with my team I know the importance of teamwork.
11 C.) Reading (20%) Reads using an appropriate lens and can engage in a continuing dialogue within and beyond a discipline or a community of readers
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
For this goal I would take note of my efforts when reading articles and doing my top 5 assignments. I would think about the context of the reading and the meaning behind it. | Some examples of the assignments I could use are – Article Annotation Rawson and Munoz -Henrietta Lacks Top 5 assignment -Chapter 11 Top 5 assignments – Library Day | Signs of me meeting this goal would be like, my responses to certain reading and my time spent in class discussions. Also, how I interpreted the information for the assignment. |
Henrietta Lacks Top 5 assignment (5%) was one of the assignments I took time and observed what information was being presented. I learned something I had some knowledge about but found the reason why these things happened.

This example is something that was discussed in class that I found to be interesting on the topic. I also had discussions with my classmates on the trials this family went through and my insight on racism.

For Article Annotation Rawson and Munoz (5%), I read the importance of Data cleaning and how important it is for any after-effects of research. With this example, I took time to understand to importance of research rather than assuming, what research was from personal experiences. We also talked in class about how to become better researchers when working on different projects in the future.
2 B.) Critical & creative thinking (20%) Takes risks in assignments and in approaches to learning to create new knowledge
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
For this goal, I know how safe it could be not taking risk in any assignments. There are also miss opportunities when it comes to always playing it safe. So, I will continue to think outside the box on each assignment and make sure it helps better my critical thinking | Some examples of the assignments I could use are -Reflection #1 – CITI training -Chapter 4 and 9 top 5 assignment -Final Project | Proving that I met this goal will be my effort into each assignment, and my perspective on the assignment overall rather than what others think. |
This goal has to deal with taking risks in assignments and not doing something pointless but taking that chance for a new learning opportunity. Reflection 1 (5%) I made sure my information wasn’t only true, but I was able to back up how important the knowledge of field data was. Seeing things from a perspective I wouldn’t normally think about.

This example dives into creating new knowledge and experiences for not only me but my group members. Creating new opportunities for information to be shared with those, who may not know anything at all about this topic.

7 B.) Skills for Lifelong Learning (20%) Pursues knowledge and educational experience beyond the classroom
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
I want to better this skill because it will not only help me with research in this class but better my efforts in other classes. So, I will put in extra effort into finding information needed. | Some examples of the assignments I could use are – Find a Survey assignment -Final Project -Reflection #4 -CITI training | Success in meeting this goal would be the information cited in certain assignments, also the knowledge I gained while looking into the topic at hand. I would be able to share this with my group or peers in my class, that relates to my topic. |

13 A.) Written Communication (20%) Demonstrates a thorough understanding of context, audience, and purpose
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
When doing any assignment knowing your audience and the context your work matters. When meeting this goal, I will challenge myself to be a better writer and making sure I know what I’m writing about. | Some examples of the assignments I could use are -Reflection#2 -Reflection#3 -Reflection#4 -Reflection#5 | Success in this goal would prove that I know what information that was being presented and the understanding of why the assignment was made. |

With this example, I learned the importance of data cleaning and how it works with researchers. Knowing that all information is made to be valued rather than sugarcoating information to make things sound better.
