Fall 2022 Portfolio
Introduction
I think that my favorite part of the semester so far has been one of the digital projects we have done. I’ve really liked having the opportunity to be creative about my projects and getting to focus them on something that I’m passionate about. However, I also found these projects to be the hardest part of the semester. Being creative with projects and figuring out the inital ideas has always been something I’ve struggled with, I always find it hard not overthinking and actually commiting to any one idea.
I feel like I’ve especially excelled in goal #1 “I will use appropriate relevant and compelling language to clearly communicate with my readers and to convey my own understanding of the work.” I feel like I’ve started off the year with exceptional written communication, which can really be seen in artifacts like my NGRREC social media report. I also feel like my written communication is the skill I have seen the most improvement in this semester. For the second half of the sememester I want to continue working on my communication skills, I specifically want to focus on my spoken/oral communication skills since I feel like I haven’t really worked on them much this semester.
Goal 1 (30%)
I will use appropriate relevant and compelling language to clearly communicate with my readers and to convey my own understanding of the work.
NGRREC Social Media Report
One of my greatest challenges this semester has been a task assigned to me by my communications internship at NGRREC. I was assigned the task of creating a social media report that could be presented to the higher-ups in the organization to analyze our social media accounts and stress the importance of said accounts in the current world. This report shows a clear understanding of the use of professional communication. It also shows an effective use of diagrams and charts to convey the numbers to the reader.
What Was Learned?
- How to use professional and precise language in a school or job setting
- How to format a report in an effective way
- How to effectively use media in your writing
CODES Digital Project #1
My Digital Project #1 clearly shows a strong start when it comes to my written communication. It shows my ability to use photos to express written ideas and help strengthen points. It also shows my ability to keep a solid theme throughout my writing with a clear and consise beginning and ending.
What Was Learned?
- How to effectivley tell a personal story
- How to take an outsider perspective when looking at your own writing
- How to effectively use media in your writing
Goal 2 (30%)
I will use compelling and appropriate language choices to deliver presentations effectively and cohesively.
Digital Project #2
My digital project 2 focused on a piece of multimodal jounalism focused on the Star Wars universe. This was my first ever time editing and creating a video from a series of clips. For this video I used a combination of the expressed emotion in the clips, the wording in some clips, and the lyrics of the background music to clearly tell a story and introduce the article to my audience.
What Was Learned?
- How to effectively use music to express emotion
- How to use non verbal communication to present a topic
- How to use video software to edit a presentation
- Add music
- Clip videos
- Seperate audio and video
- Save in different file formats
- How to change resolution and aspect ratio
- How to layer video and audio
- How to fade in/out video and audio
Goal 3 (10%)
I will take the assumptions of myself and others and knowledge I gain through separate sources to create logical solutions to the problems I am faced with.
NGRREC Social Media Report
For this report I had to take analytics and data avalible from 3-4 different social media websites and analyze them to create a singular consise report about the sucess of our media. I also had to take these seperate forms of data and find a way to accurately compare them even though they were from completely different types of media.
What Was Learned?
- How to effectively analyze multiple sources and collectively analyze them
- How to effectively list out problems
- How to create soultions that properly analyze and considers all aspects of an issue
Goal 4 (20%)
I will properly recognize the ethical issues that we are faced with and how they interact. I will then take this understanding and apply it to the solutions I come up with.
Digital Project #1
For this project I had to look at something in my own life and question “why?” I immediatley decided to focus on my own identity and why/how I got to the point I’m at now. It forced me to look back at the racism and discrimination I’ve faced before and how its effected me into my adult life. It made me look at how growing up is a (generally) passively racist white dominated community had caused me to hate my own blackness and how the people I’ve met throught the years have helped me recover from it.
What Was Learned?
- How to take a step back and look at your own issues/experiences
- How to look at your experiences from a sociological perspective
- How to work backwards from problem to root
Goal 5 (10%)
I will look both inside and outside the classroom to deepen my knowledge of the things that interest me.
Digital Project #2
For this project we had to look at content outside of the classroom to properly tailor a piece from class to an audience on social media. This project required me to look at myself, what I’m interested in and how I can connect it to the topics that we learned in class.
What I learned?
- How to express my interests in a different format than I’m used to
- How to effectively interperate what we learn/find in class and apply it
