Introduction
In CODES 121 I learned skills of patience, time management, and improvement in written communication. I most enjoy getting to know my classmates and learning more about the CODES program. I most excelled in working with others and I want to improve more in improving my presentations.
During my first semester of CODES 121 I have learned many fundamental skills. I have improved in my management of conflicts when they arise, the ability to analyze a text more than just the surface level that is given to the reader, and most importantly taking everything a day at a time. I believe I most excelled in my ability to evaluate text, and I want to work more on going out of my way to gain knowledge.
Goal 1 (30%)
Based on 12c:
Improving my ability to work with others by focusing on my individual work and asking others’ opinions
In the video it shows me working with Ava and Venus from my cohort and creating a video for class while also having fun. I learned to listen more from others’ opinions during this project and it caused the project to improve.
in the group photo it shows me with my group in my engineering class. We created a project of a tennis ball launcher and we ended up with the highest score of all the teams. The reviewed me as an essential part of the team and a great help.
In the text it shows me asking for my team’s opinion while going out to buy supplies for our project.
in the next text you see me asking for my teams’ opinion on meeting times so we could better understand our assignment not only as a group but also as individuals.

Goal 2 (20%)
Based on 7b: Going out of my way to increase my knowledge in and out of the classroom purely on my own interest
In my source analysis I was really interested in how many POC were affected by the water crisis in Michigan and went out of my way to do more research on the topic.
I was interested in the affects that black women and the treatment of America had on their mentality. I decide to analyze a book where she expressed her power in sexuality even though it’s looked down upon.
“When I think of a black woman I think of a tree
Strong brown and beautiful
A tree that gives nutrients from her branches
A tree who roots run deep into the earth
A tree who soil helps the earth go round” I was interested in the discrepancies that black women meet around the world. I saw a study that showed black women typically keep in their anger and it is causing an autoimmune disorder in the community. This infuriated me and I expressed some of it in a poem I wrote.
In this source Analysis we read a poem by Langston Hughes where he describes the river and the connection to many in different continents this peaked my interest and I looked for how those rivers have been used throughout the years and how similar they are to each other.
Goal 3 (15%)
Improving my organization of presenting to become more understandable and cohesive
A compliment from Despain after a presentation. To prepare for it I made notes on the topics I wanted to focus on.
On this notecard it gives me notes for my presentation so I feel more prepared and organized during it.
I made a note card to organize the points that I wanted to speak on in my speech. It allowed me to take more breathes and less looking on the screen because I already pre-pared for the performance.
Goal 4 (20%)
Increasing my writing ability by showing my understanding of the text with compelling writing
“In the end all the components of a wicked problem apply to the issue of the floodings of Moline. The vague problem definition is the many ways flooding affects can differ city to city. The undefined solution are the many ways that flooding can be solved but all come with cons. Not being able to completely end the flooding of the Mississippi River causing there to be no endpoint. Multiple of the solutions are irreversible to the ecosystem and city such as building floodwalls. The unique location of my town; and the urgency to find a solution that will work are all are reasons why the flooding of the Quad Cities is an important problem that needs attention. Maybe than other kids will be able to go to their special ballpark games.” I believe in my multimodal I showed understanding of the text by showing the connection to my town and other examples in my writing.
“Blows opinion changes the perspective of the text. His opinion changes the text because he’s not coming towards his opinion as an out looker but an insider who has been disappointed many times by America to the point, he fears more for the youth than the outcome of America and he really pushes his disappointment of America in the piece.” In my digital project 2 I showed understanding of the rhetoric the author was putting in the article of the “Great Erasure” and I believe noticing this improve my ability to explain it to others.
“Specifically, a symbolism Alexie uses is the symbol of comparing his mother to salmon. He even goes to the point of naming a poem “I Turn My Mother into a Salmon, I turn Salmon into My Mother.” In the poem Alexie compares the death of mother to the dying breed of salmon due to global warming. He says “… Experts warn that my mother will go extinct in certain bodies of water as the earth grows hotter and hotter” (Alexie 134). He is expressing the loss of his mother as a salmon, because salmon plays such a big part in his culture and day-to-day life just as his mother did. His mother has left his life due to her passing so are salmon due to the warming world. He must cope with losing not only his mother who did so much for him, but also a delicacy he had and enjoyed with her. One that is so important to his life.” in my reflection 5 I evaluate the complexity of the symbols in Sherman Alexie writing. I believe this gave my analysis more depth and interest to the reader.
“Black Lives Matter! What do those three words inflict in your mind? In “The Great Erasure” By Charles M. Blow he talks about the rage and passion the BLM used to put in the country. We would hear of new protest daily. Your favorite influencer most likely posted a black screen and showed their support. It was a part of time where the country was divided because of covid but somehow still connected with the pain of Black Americans. There was so much beautiful art done by artists. There was so much chatter about BLM but then it went radio silent. Blow talks about how other events like Roe v. Wade, Ukraine, and Inflation triumphed over in peoples mind of the BLM movement. Many people have stopped their support in laws and voting. Blow expresses how he has little hope in America to improve on black violence, but he’s worried about the youth. The youth of American are so passionate for change and will fight skin and bones to see a change.” In my reflection 3 I believe bringing in my own experiences and knowledge to the text shows my deeper understanding of the reading. I also believe it becomes more complying by bringing in an experience that some may have never seen or heard before.
Goal 5 (15%)
Improving my ability to evaluate text and apply them to issues
“They used the river as a guide to the freedom of this town. They used the resources for not only nutrition but also to hide. The town was filled with craftsmen like carpenters and boatmen and caused this freedom to be built on primary black work and pride. The town shows a perfect picture of black determination of freedom without the help of white counterparts but inside their own community even in a time where they had little of anything besides their own power. The town again is not talk about much having this town of persistence and black power started by a driven black women Mother Baltimore is a diamond hidden in the ruff of white saviorism. It seems except for the civil rights movement the efforts for freedom by primarily black voices are removed. Mother used ownership of land to find their own way in the new town they were making. They used ownership that was once forced upon them as a way to form a community and thrive. Brooklyn shows the persistence of black Americans fight for freedom with little help that has little to show for this history now.” While doing research for my Digital project 3 on freeman towns I connected the issue of white saviorism to the low representation of black people thriving in history
I applied the issues of countries being exploited for fast fashion to the issue of biodiversity in crops
I connected the issue of white media being more digestible to audiences to it causing a white savior complex.
in this video it’s me practicing for my speech so I’m a better member for my group showing my individuality towards the goal to improve the group and my performance. I also helped another member by giving them advice during practice. (goal 1)
