First-Week Introduction
My reason for my five goals is to improve my communication and connection to scholarly text and applying these skills to boost engagement from the communities I work with. The most challenging will be connecting my research reading into relatability to the communities I work with.
Midterm Introduction
During this semester a big thing I learned is adaptability and excelling in a place of uncertainty. I have enjoyed going on my own course and exploring more information in how to succeed in my mission of connecting the community partners with the community. I struggled with adapting with a lot of change in our previous methods of connecting the partners. I most excelled with collaborations, and I would like to bring more of my research to my writing to make my research more relatable since I have not met that goal yet.
Final Introduction
During this semester I have faced a lot of shifts and turns with the progression of my group’s projects. A lot of things came unexpected, but me and my group dealt with these challenges perfectly. We combined together and moved as one. I have improved most in my communication skills, and I was most surprised by the way I can adjust to change to still come out with a successful product. I want to continue to take with me my gained communication skills in CODES 221 and I will do this by taking my time when responding to others and giving myself time to breathe to be the best partner.
Course Goals
Choose five goals from the CODES Student Learning Outcomes that you’d like to work toward. Choose goals that are relevant to the scope of this course, select artifacts/examples based on activities assigned for this course, and explain characteristics in a way that illustrates how your artifacts/examples demonstrate your progress toward the goal.
Goal 1 (20%)
Based on (2A): Taking Knowledge from multiple sources to transform ideas
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| I will try to engage previous knowledge to help improve ideas. | reflections, final assignments emails conversation | I will show ways of using past knowledge in current writing, and utilizing my research |
during a meeting with Daizjah Reese of Heartlands I used my past knowledge of working with the community to inform Daizjah of ideas we could possibly use in the future. This shows my use of past knowledge and research in conversation to improve our future plans.

In this reflection I brought in sources I have reviewed to inform Shea of the things that have impacted and informed me during the semester.

In my data collection I connect the knowledge I have gained from archives and the information I have collected during in field work with the community partners I found some solutions to helping our project of implanting trees into the systems.

In my Data collection I used my previous knowledge of the best way to access data later on in our process. I connected this knowledge with my previous results in research to have better preparation from the information gained in the Alvin collection.

Using my previous knowledge of surveying me and my partner were able to improve Daizjah from Heartlands survey to the community with giving recomdations from improvements and the time it took for the survey.
Goal 2 (20%)
Based on (8b): I want to make my oral and written communications more complying, informative, and interesting to listen to
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| I will practice my speeches beforehand and use notecards/ putting more thought into communication | Speeches Communications with JJKFAN and Heartlands Emails notecards | I will show my preparedness for content, and show my steps of preparation |

Above is a set of notes of what we have done previously so when I had a meeting with Chad and Daizjah, I had information of what I would like to inform them of.

I informed Daizjah of Venus and I’s confusion of our current goal with heartlands. When communicating with Daizjah, I showed her some of the behind the scenes of our work to show her efforts we have put in before. During this conversation everyone was engaged in the conversation.

In this email I communicated my issue with completing my task given to me by Shea. I informed Shea of my concerns about the appearance of my poster due to me not having the best artistic ability, but I will try my best.

In this text message I made an invocative to start and divide work assigned for our CODES class. I also informed my teammate of our process and steps we should do in the future clearly.
Goal 3 (20%)
Based on (8c): Develops clear, innovative central messages with significant supporting materials.
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| I will try to improve my communication skills by making them more concise with my message, and easily distinguishable of what my mission is | Speeches Communications with JJKFAN and Heartlands Emails | My speeches and communication will show a clear message |

When talking with Daizjah I explained to her the mission me and my partner had for working with heartlands. I showed Daizjah examples of our previous work and things I wanted to do in the future. I showed her clearly our mission with work to support it.

In my data collection while looking through archrivals I found a connection of the past efforts of improving St. Louis to our current mission with Heartlands of increasing tree planting in the city.

In this poster I made above I develop a message for residents of St. Louis to gain an incentive for wanting trees in their community by telling them the improvements it can make to their air.

In this text I wrote a clear message of the stakeholders of our project and evidence of why I believe they’re stakeholders.
Goal 4 (20%)
Based on (1b): Connects and extends knowledge from academic study to civic engagement.
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| Connecting my research to increasing engagement in the reflections, final assignments, emails community | Emails Final projects Engagement | I will show extended knowledge in my studies, and putting it into my work with others |

In this blurb of text, I connected the information from the archrivals to the engagement of St. Louis community programs
.

In this poster I use knowledge from academic reports of the importance of trees to the air for urban communities to translate to St. Louis residents the great things they could do for their neighborhoods.

In my data collection I connected the previous found communities of St. Louis to improve the community as a whole to how we can implement those ideas to Heartlands with their plans to plant more trees in the St. Louis Area.

I attended a city council meeting with heartlands to inform the government and citizens about the positive impacts of trees using research we found from the archives and making posters.
Goal 5 (20%)
Based on (9b): applying my research readings and methods to other contexts to increase not only my knowledge, but relatability of the text to projects
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| Show my understanding or issues and improving them with solutions | Final Projects Research Collaboration with partners | It will show me relating and using my research to relate and increase my solutions in my work |

In my data collection process, I made sure to allow my data was accessible to me and therefore others while meeting the needs of the community partners.

In my reading of the archives, I connected the information I gained from previous communities in the papers above to possible ways our community partners can gain interest from the residents of east St. Louis like what was done in the past.

In this poster I used my knowledge of trees improving communities with their health benefits to relate to St. Louis residents the importance of the research we are doing for their neighborhoods.

During the city council meeting I attended me and Venus’s data collected from archrivals and research paper were used in the presentation showing our concepts were developed and supported enough to inform St. Louis government and citizens the importance of trees.
