CODES emphasizes taking education beyond the traditional classroom and into the broader St. Louis region, offering students a hands-on, community-centered learning experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key features of the CODES program include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Collaborative Research<\/strong>: Students engage in research that mirrors real-world, innovative working environments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Small Class Sizes<\/strong>: A tight-knit learning community fosters close collaboration and meaningful interactions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consistent Mentorship<\/strong>: Faculty and community members provide ongoing mentorship to support student growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diverse Curriculum<\/strong>: The curriculum and faculty reflect the students&#8217; diverse backgrounds, ensuring a rich and inclusive educational experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Community Partnerships<\/strong>: Students apply their learning in real-world settings through partnerships with local organizations, encouraging critical thinking and practical problem-solving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community Partnerships and Themes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, student research teams collaborate with organizations in a partner community. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Alton (2022-2023 Cohort)<\/strong>: The first cohort focuses on &#8220;Resiliency and Spatial Justice in the Face of Climate Change&#8221; in Alton, Illinois. Students explore water quality, flood management, housing practices, and segregation, drawing on the city\u2019s historical significance and contemporary challenges. Research teams work with the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, the YWCA of Southwestern Illinois, and the National Council of Negro Women-Alton Section.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<nav
