For my final project as a group, the water conservation education group went to JJK to teach in a water fair. During this water fair we had stations that informed students on water filtration, different types of soil, and basic water knowledge. These different lesson plans I found inspired me to compile them into one idea. I choose to focus on soil because it’s an important part of growing plants and is something that can be manipulated by kids. My station focused specifically on different types of soil and inflitration. During this station I described different types of soils and what they are used for. Students were also tasked with writing down adjectives of the soils. This lesson was created based off of my annotated bibliography. My water fair station went extremely well. My kids were engaged in discussion and grouped up to figure out my questions. One aspect that I wish went better at my station was the overall attention of the kids, when they came to my station the wet soil trays were a huge distraction causing students to miss important explanations at the beginning of my lesson plan. In the future, instead of trays I would have put the wet soil in smaller cups to reduce the mess and transition time. In addition I would also have liked to go into more detail about the infiltration aspect of my project, specifically talking about what happens when water is mixed with soil. I could also go into details about the molecules of soil on water. Overall I was proud of what my team did during the water fair, I had an amazing time interacting with kids and teaching something new. This is an experience that will help me in the future as an educator. In conclusion, I believed the water fair to be a very beneficial experience to kids and can see this being implemented at other schools.
