CODES221 Reflection 4
The water fair at the JJK Foundation was a huge success, not only for me but also for my other group members. In my first round of kids, I was nervous, but I managed to get through it smoothly. The main challenge for me was making sure I don’t speak too fast and fumble words. Eventually, I got into a rhythm of explaining, and I started to relax more. I noticed that the kids responded better when I got to the kinesthetic part of my lesson, which was when they got to feel the soil. I also noticed throughout each round, the students were able to recognize and differentiate the different types of soils after assigning an adjective to it. For example, students recognized the clay soil as the clumpy soil, the potting soil as light, and the sand as grainy. In addition, the worksheet I was assigned with this lesson promoted teamwork amongst kids and writing comprehension. Students were tasked with writing down descriptors and adjectives of the 3 different types of soil. While students were working on the worksheet, I made sure to guide their thinking by asking certain questions that would lead them to the answer. For example, I asked, what color is this soil, What does it feel like, and Is it light or dense. My favorite part about the water fair was seeing all the different personalities of the kids and getting to teach them something new. This experience is something I will never forget and will help me in the future as a music educator.
