My major is early childhood education. I chose this as my major because I love kids and I love working with them. Throughout high school I kept thinking of different careers I might like but ultimately, I would always come back to teaching. Once I got more experience with working with kids I realized how much I loved it and how good I was at it and I knew that I would enjoy doing it for the rest of my life. My career interests are teaching, obviously, but also thinking ahead, I wouldn’t mind being an assistant principal and eventually maybe a principal. I also want to travel a lot and there are a lot of places I could go where I could teach people in different countries, or teach them English or even have other teaching jobs in different countries. Courses Completed: During my first semester, I was enrolled in a total of five classes. The first one I will talk about was Psych. This was just a basic intro to psychology course which was similar to the one I took during my senior year of high school. It was pretty easy since I had already learned about most of the stuff but there were a few new things I learned. The next class I had was the CODES class with Dr. Despain. In that class we went over a lot of digital stuff and how to analyse research and how to use that research to make digital story-maps of it. The next class I had was an intro to geology class where we learned about rocks and different types of rocks along with natural disasters, that class was pretty easy. After that I had the research teams where we focused on learning about the YWCA which is my community partner, on top of that we found articles and videos that involved racial injustice since that is part of what the Y focuses on. The last class I took last semester was a history class where we talked about the constructive era to the late 1800’s. This past semester, Spring ‘23, I was also enrolled in five courses. The first one was an intro to education course where we talk about curriculum, our personal teaching philosophies and what all being a teacher involves including the legal, moral, aspects. The next class is a math class for elementary majors where we start with learning the basics of elementary math. Next is the CODES class taught by Dr. Msengi, where we talk about research and systems thinking and we talk about different types of research and research studies. Then, I have a child psychology class which I am really enjoying. We talk about the development of children from the time they’re born as they grow up and become adults. The last class I have is our research teams this semester. This semester we have been able to meet with our community partner, Dorothy Hummel, a few times and she has been super helpful and has told us all about the Y and all the programs they have there. With these meetings we have been able to change our focus of research teams to benefit the Y. Future Courses: I already have my classes for the Fall ‘23 semester. I will be enrolled in another five courses. I have not been able to register for these classes since registration does not open until the 6th and it is only the 4th. If all goes according to plan I will be enrolled in a CODES class that goes over biology, the second history class which picks up where the last history class left off, a geography class that talks about meteorology, math 112b which will piggyback off of math112a I think, and that’s the math I’m in right now. And hopefully, I will be able to enroll in a beginners German course. I haven’t thought much about it the spring courses but if registration goes according to plan this week, I plan on taking the last math class of the series which would be math112c, and then I will have the CODES research team again, then I will most likely take the next CIED course which is CIED310, and then hopefully I’ll take the next German class so I can keep taking them over the next couple years. I’ll have room for two more classes next spring if I can get into the three I’ve already listed, so I hope to get either an Econ or PoliSci class out of the way. I’m leaning more towards taking a PoliSci. The last class I would want to take would probably be an interdisciplinary science course and one that I had found that sounded like something I would like is called Diversity, Culture and Comic Books.
