CODE 221
Reflection #1: Observation and Inference
During our visit at MOBOT, we were shown a variety of tools to help implement CODES and what we are trying to teach/promote to others. I think a big obstacle for us is choosing the tool that best fits and supports our research group, for example visual signs. I do not think this tool was favored by many in CODES, but it is probably one of the most common and easy ways to spread information and educate others. This visit definitely helped me visualize and picture the pros and cons by writing them down. There were even ways to show our work that I did not think about.
I may be interested in a tool where you can use a QR code and it leads you to a digital platform. When I was given the example during our visit Thursday, I liked how efficient it was, as well as how easy the access was. It does have me thinking about our audience. If my research team were to do this tool, it might be confusing for the elderly. I do have a soft spot for simple signs and brochures because my grandparents do not own a cell phone. They are still very much “with it”, they just have never felt the need to use anything other than a computer. On the other hand, it is not an app so I think they made a good choice for people who worry about downloading things to their devices. I think this tool might be the best to get our idea out of African American Knowledge at MOBOT and is my favorite.
I also liked the approach of a children’s activity and I think that would be a great idea for other teams who are focusing on community involvement with the youth. As an early childhood education major, this sparked my interest. I love that it is interactive so kids and even adults will not get bored of. This encourages them to learn more about what we have to say/ what we have been working on. I am not sure how my team could represent the history of African American knowledge though.
I think the video approach has good intentions, but I was pretty bored watching the one our partners presented. I am also not sure how we would get the video out to the community so everyone can watch and know about it. It also might be hard for people who have hearing issues/ seeing issues. I know it was hard for me to even hear the video. I think videos are a great way to learn though, so I would have to look into it more.
When working with the partners, I think they are excited to hear our ideas with how we want to implement them to help the community. I appreciate that they are working with us and I thought the approach of visually showing us tools helped.
I am a little nervous since everything is wrapping up soon and I still have questions and am unsure with how to take certain approaches. I am excited to see where my sub group wants to go with this project after the visit to the garden. I have already learned so much since last year and I can not wait to reflect in December.
I am fine with whatever tool my sub research group decides to agree on because I think they all have their pros and cons. I would be able to use any of these tools to get our word out, but choosing one might be a challenge.
