- Reflection #3: Data Collection (October 17)
You should have implemented some aspect of data collection by this date during your site visit. You might have distributed a survey, hosted an interview, convened a focus group, or conducted an experiment. Describe the experience in detail. Now that you have begun the work, what has gone well? What problems didn’t you foresee? What do you wish you’d done differently?
During this site visit my group was able to talk one on one with Jenn from MOBOT. I am glad we were able to get her thoughts and opinions as she felt very optimistic about our plans for the project. She brought up some great resources that would help us, including how to find past information about the enslaved people in the St. Louis area.
Our group expressed the concern of not being able to find enough resources and information about slavery and Jenn pointed out that there were resources at Wash U that could potentially help us. She said that she would not be at the gardens this upcoming week, but she will work on providing us more information. She asked us questions along the lines of: “What resources do you need from us?” & “What are some things you are nervous about when completing the project?”
It was nice to be able to talk one on one with a person from the garden because I feel like we are able to get more answers. This way we can ask specific questions and get what we need. Besides digging up information and doing research on the past history of slavery in the gardens, we will need help for the technical side of things, for me anyways.
The QR code part of the project sounds like the most challenging part for me personally. I am excited about creating and writing our information in the booklet, but we need assistance on implementing the digital sides of things. Something Jenn mentioned was graphic design. This sparked my interest however and made me excited for the technical side of this project.
