This semester, I plan on strengthening my communication skills and collaborative skills. Learning how to take feedback and apply it while also listening to constructive criticism. I want to improve my research and writing skills. While also developing better public speaking skills this semester walking into this semester with an open mind so I can take away skills that will strengthen me for the future.

Midterm Introduction

Throughout this semester, I have been working towards developing our final project. Within my group, we have been building a foundation of research, planning, and ideas. At the beginning of this course, I focused on the key parts and understanding of our project. I gathered sources and explored different methods of research to help strengthen our project. As the semester continues, I plan on finalizing our project and my individual contributions.

Final Introduction

This semester, I was able to grow a lot and reflect on many things. I focused on strengthening my ability to collaborate effectively and communicate ideas with respect and clarity. Through group work and individual assignments, I worked to build on others’ contributions, encourage participation, and develop ideas. I also improved my research skills by using effective search strategies to support my work. My experiences working within my group and community settings helped me become more vocal, responsible, and engaged as a group member. Overall, this semester has helped me grow academically and strengthened my ability to contribute to team environments. I also group a lot as a person this semester, and I will take everything I learned with me in the future.

Goal 1(25%)

1a. I personally worked on the introduction and the findings + themes.

Introduction

We expect our water systems to be safe and reliable but that isn’t the reality for many of the residents in Cahokia Heights. The ongoing water quitting crisis this community has experienced reveals a deeper issue.

Throughout CODES, we approached this issue by using different research methods to better understand the cause of water equity, analyze the effect it had on the residents in the community, and also gather stories and personal experiences so people from outside the community can understand the hardship that residents of Cahokia Heights have to face daily. We decided to pursue this project because water is a natural human need, and everyone should have safe and healthy access to it. The ongoing struggle in Cahokia Heights has revealed infrastructure and equity issues. By focusing on this issue, we aim to spread awareness, give those who feel as though they aren’t heard, inform, and, most importantly, advocate so we can spread awareness.

To make this project possible, we worked & collaborated with different stakeholders and partners. Our team included Heartlands Conservancy, Cahokia Heights Public Library, and Arianna Landry. Together, we collaborated on doing archival research, site visits, interviews, & research to bring our project together.

Finding + Theme

Our research was trying to understand the wicked problem and answer the central question. How are the water crisis and flooding issues impacting residents of Cahokia Heights & what factors contribute to this ongoing issue? While doing research, we confirmed that infrastructure and environmental conditions played a major role in the water crisis. This research supported our wicked problem and research questions. This issue wasn’t just environmental, and because of infrastructure, it was also due to a lack of equity, resources, and systemic neglect.

To analyze our care, we participate in different research methods that help us conclude different things. We used articles, reports, site visits, and interviews to help identify the issues and support our key findings. We gathered all our research and information; we discussed and compared our key findings to see if we had any similarities. This helped us develop the central theme of our project.

The major themes were health risk, lack of trust and communication, failing or poor infrastructure, and flooding. This issue had an impact on residents’ mental and physical well-being; exposure to contaminated water and sewage created serious health risks. Evidence showed that this was a continuous issue causing property damage and disrupting the flow of their daily lives. Residents experiencing flooding after rainstorms due to poor infrastructure and sewage systems caused water to back up into streets & homes. The failure of infrastructure is one of the root causes of this water crisis. Our findings also showed the lack of effort by government officials toward the community. Our interviews revealed an individual perspective of residents of Cahokia Heights and their personal experience dealing with these ongoing issues. Many residents stated that there was neglect or a lack of help from government officials.

Our themes show how the issue in Cahokia Heights is a multitude of issues, ranging from environmental, infrastructure, transparency, and social factors. Our project is designed to address the problem but also spread knowledge and awareness so we & others can advocate.

Listed below are photos from our project over time that we have taken and have been included in the emplace contribution. I specifically selected these photos to support the work in our emplace contribution.

Reflection 2

My reflection shows that I can adapt strategies as needed to fit changing or diverse contexts. Taking multiple factors into account ensures the final solution is thoughtful, flexible, and well-suited to the assignment.

I want our project to be able to reach anyone with similar issues because I know the citizens of Cahokia Heights aren’t the only residents in a community dealing with a water crisis. Even if we can’t directly help other residents in other communities or areas, I want our project and website to be a tool and guide they can use. A resource to help with their situation, or even a resource to inspire college students like us, or anyone to use their voice and knowledge, just like we are. If more people know about these issues and they’re able to reach others, we’ll be able to bring more attention to them and get more people to pay attention. For the project, our stakeholders will be Heartland’s Conservatory. At the beginning of the fall 2025 semester, I was interested in partnering with other organizations to consider them as potential stakeholders. If we can get in contact and make a connection with these other organizations, they will also hopefully be potential stakeholders in this project & if not stakeholders, they can be used as a guide or resource. Currently partnering with Heartland as our stakeholder were able to use their guidance to shape how we move when communicating, reaching out, and creating different things for the residents of Cahokia. We were able to use their feedback and connections to improve our website, ethics, and collaboration skills. A potential stakeholder I was looking at was a grassroots organization based in the southern Illinois area. This organization does work in St. Louis, East Saint Louis, Believe, and other surrounding areas. This organization has also partnered with SIUE and the Kimmel Hub for volunteer tasks and community service for the students. If this stakeholder were a part of our project, I believe we could collaborate with Heartland to organize an event that can impact the community or draw more awareness to the issues. Also, I believe they can help us shape our website into something bigger and better, making it a widespread resource for many.

Creating and considering certain factors, such as the audience and purpose, when developing work and addressing different elements

.

Goal 3(20%)

5b. Sometimes I believe I can be too critical when giving feedback to others. Giving feedback and receiving it can be crucial. You have to know how to take creative criticism and change things based on the feedback received without feeling any type of way. When giving feedback, especially in our group, I always look at their work and the effort that’s put in. Mostly, the feedback is just grammatically incorrect or just changing minor things around. When receiving feedback, I don’t let my emotions or personal feelings cloud the feedback that I receive or who I receive it from. I analyze my original piece of work and then analyze the feedback that’s given to me and decide what needs to be changed. Sometimes, depending on who gave the feedback, I take in all the feedback that was given to me and then talk to them and ask what I can do better. When giving feedback, I make sure it’s meaningful, honest, and specific, trying to point out areas that need change without being too critical or rude. Focusing on not just what can be improved or changed, but how it can be improved so that the same mistake isn’t made more than once. In order to give better feedback, I can focus on being constructive and not vague. Give a good and clear description and explanation of what needs to be changed or what can be done better. Making the feedback feel collaborative instead of having one feel as though I’m just talking to them or being rude. To improve how I engage with the feedback I receive, I can practice cognitive listening skills instead of being defensive and quick to respond, actually listening and processing what’s said, so I can get a clear understanding. Asking clarifying questions so I can reflect and fully understand before I respond, and also so I can know what direction to go in from now on. Feedback is essential when it comes to any work, especially in CODES, as it can help build a productive, engaging, and respectful experience.

Bio

My name is Sa’Dae Cooper, and I’m a rising junior at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The reflection is supported with examples and explanations.

Throughout this semester, communication has been a very important factor within our project and group. I personally feel as though communication could have been strengthened across the board so that we could get better feedback and better results within our project. Within my research teams, class interactions have heavily shaped our work. Being able to communicate and interact in class has helped us break the barrier of a lack of communication. With everyone having different majors and different schedules, it’s sometimes hard to communicate with each other outside of the class setting. Now that we had an allotted amount of time to interact and discuss within class, it had positively shaped our work because we were able to set clear expectations for everyone within the group. It helps everyone know what responsibilities and tasks they have to take on, so the work doesn’t just fall on one group member. Even though we don’t meet with our community partner or mentors often, their input has still helped shape our ongoing work. Giving their opinions, feedback, and advice has helped our group make the group project come together.

Scrolly telling outline

The outline ensures clarity by organizing supporting details in a logical, easy-to-follow structure. This helps with other projects within the case because it creates a more collaborative environment.

1. What is the purpose of your work—both the group project and individual products? What

Is the format of the group project? What individual products does this project consist of,

and in what forms (e.g., maps, podcasts, videos, reports, etc.)?

The purpose of our group project is to spread awareness while also creating resources for Cahokia residents who are struggling with water equity issues. My individual role in the project has developed more over time. Last semester I created a page on our website collaborating with different resources, grassroots organizations, and non-profit organizations. The tab on the website gives insight into what resources are available to the residents, what people can do to support the organizations, and how they can benefit from the resources. Our group project consists of maps, reports, and pictures that help summarize the work we have been doing with our project about Cahokia Heights Residents. Over time, I would like to include more things in my individual portion of the project, following the work that I have already done. I would like to create a map pinning each grassroots organization. Giving an email, location, number of contact, and also including a small description of the organization so viewers can see what they do and how it can benefit them or others in the community they might know.

2. Who is this project made for? Describe the relevant stakeholders and what they might

need to best understand and/or use the different elements of this project.

This project is designed for residents of Cahokia Heights, employees of Heartland, our group, and other fellow CODES students, as well as students who are working on projects similar to ours. Our target audience is students, educators, and community residents. Our relevant stakeholders are Heartland’s. In order to understand our project, they will need clear and concise communication between our group and them. Also, a list of potential next steps will be provided, allowing us to gather feedback from our stakeholders and identify next steps to address any necessary changes or additions, ensuring the project continues smoothly.

3. Why is it important for your work to be shared? What value does it bring to the

communities/stakeholders it serves?

There are many reasons as to why our work needs to be shared. Our project is raising awareness, showing different sides to the story of the residents of Cahokia Heights. It gives a voice to residents who feel like they’re underrepresented or ignored. Sharing our work can bring attention to others and raise more awareness. The value it brings to the stakeholders is sharing. It is educational. Our stakeholders can use our project and information to educate others, spread awareness, and help make small changes.

4. What ethical considerations are important to think about when planning to disseminate

your work? How will you ensure these ethical considerations are integrated into the

dissemination process?

Making sure all information in our work is accurate and having evidence to back up what we said. Having different sources to support what we research and include in our work. Having respect and representation since our story is real for many residents and the things they have endured that have affected them financially, mentally, emotionally, and physically, making sure we represent their story well while also respecting them and having empathy and inclusivity. Ensuring privacy and consent earlier in our project, we conducted interviews in order to do the interviews and include those interviews. We had to ask for consent and maintain privacy throughout the beginning part of our work, because this isn’t just a project, it’s someone’s real life.

5. What working practices will you adopt to ensure that your project is ready for distribution

by this time?

Having better communication within our group. Making sure everyone understands their part and can pull their weight, when given time in class, completing as much as possible, or talking to each other about what needs to be completed, so we can have an action plan. Being responsible on my end and holding myself accountable, making sure I’m doing my part and sticking to what needs to be done. Being a respectful and honest team member, respecting everyone’s opinion and input about the project, while giving respectful and honest feedback if anything needs to change or be different.

Then, please answer the following questions in a bullet point list. Please highlight who completed which sections:

6. What are the specific avenues of distribution that will make it so your project reaches

relevant stakeholders and communities (e.g., social media, specific emails, publication,

community partner advertising, etc.)? (Tip: If you aren’t sure where you should share it,

Who might be a good person to ask, and/or where might be a good place to start?)

Social media, our eportfolio, and emails. Additionally, they can utilize any resources that our community partners have to offer, and also advertise on their websites and social media, allowing for wider distribution and potentially using CODES social media platform to distribute our project and gather information.

7. For each avenue of distribution, how and when will you share the group and individual

contributions? (E.g., I will share my podcast to Spotify by researching how to upload a

podcast to Spotify, and I will send an email to Ms. Jones and post to XYZ website to

advertise it. I will actually upload the podcast by Sunday, April 26th and send the

advertising email by Tuesday, April 28th

How and when is something we’re still communicating about as a group, hopefully, when would be in the second half of the semester. For my individual contribution, I will have it ready to share in April. Since our group has decided on a scrollytelling , we have to agree on a set of data that will be ready, hopefully in April.

Group Scrolly telling

Our scrolly telling helped strengthen our overall group collaboration by combining active listening with thoughtful responses. Expanding on others’ ideas leads to more thorough outcomes for the assignment.

Reflection 5

Reflection five gave me a chance to reflect on my collaboration and work this semester.

From the very beginning of CODES until now, I feel like I have grown so much as an individual. There are multiple things I took away from this semester and CODES. Use your resources, ask for help, time management & organizational skills, embrace uncertainty, communication & collaboration skills, & prioritize mental health. This has been the first semester in CODES where I have taken on multiple tasks. Along with being a CODES scholar, I’m also a resident assistant, a member of the Black Student Union and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., a student worker, and I’m taking five other classes. As you can see, this is a lot for a college student, and many don’t take on as many tasks as I have, but these takeaways were key to my success this semester. I learned to use the resources around me, it’s so many resources on campus and within CODES that can help students succeed. CODES has a very supportive staff, and Dr.Hildebrandt has been an amazing professor. Asking for help has helped. When I first came to college, I wasn’t as vocal. I was very shy and uncertain, not as confident in a classroom setting as I should’ve been, but growing with my cohort and CODES professor has helped me become more vocal and confident in classroom settings. Now, you can’t get me to stop talking. Time management and organization were big takeaways for me because they stopped me from being stressed out about things such as a calendar, reminders, and a planner to help me organize certain tasks while also not overwhelming my plate. Being in CODES has taught me how to collaborate with others from diverse backgrounds while also respecting and acknowledging others’ perspectives. This is a takeaway I know I will have to use further in the future. Prioritizing my mental health was one of the most important things and takeaways for me. At the end of the day, I’m human and can only handle so much. I learned that it’s okay to take a break and recuperate. I learned that it’s okay to slow down and let the motions flow. Being in CODES and specifically 320 has helped mature and shape me into a better person, and as I continue to grow and evolve in my college career & community, I will take every talk, experience, and memory with me.

A Work B Work C Work -Misses one class or less, or completes make-up work for excused absences-Annotates all readings thoroughly-Makes substantive comments in discussions-Completes all assignments on time (or has an approved extension request)-Work demonstrates intellectual engagement, care, effort, and growth in response to feedback-Collaborates substantially, contributes to vision, works equally with peers -Misses two classes or less,…

["post-553","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
