In my group’s spatial mapping, we looked at how far away college students’ essentials were, such as the local gas station, Target, gym, and Walmart. Each one ranged from 2 minutes away, one could be just 2 minutes away such as the fitness center on campus, to 10 minutes away, which was the nearest Walmart. This drive for a student to take at any time is not terrible at all, but if the student does not own a car, it becomes more difficult for them. There are many other choices such as riding a bike, uber, and bicycling. If you take the bicycle, your 10-minute drive becomes a 20-minute journey.

Conversely, the bus only departs every 30 minutes, so you must account for that, the bus fare, and all of the stops along the route.  This may be not a particularly cost- or time-effective option. However, because they do not have access to vehicles, students must travel such roads on a daily basis.

This is an excellent example of spatial unfairness, and one way to address it is to build up a separate bus specifically for siue students to take for free, as we already pay a lot to get to university. Being a full-time student can be challenging, and with things not being easily accessible, it can a lot of stress on top of the average student’s life.
