My college journey has been one of perseverance, resilience, and growth. From the beginning, I encountered challenges that tested my determination and reshaped the way I approached education and life.

During my first semester at SIUE, I struggled with the transition from excelling academically with little effort to studying day and night without immediate success. For the first time, I found myself failing despite seeking tutoring, attending extra help sessions, and dedicating countless hours to preparation. It was discouraging, and I often felt defeated. However, I reminded myself why I came to SIUE; to honor my fallen angels and to break generational cycles. The CODES program became a cornerstone of my adjustment, providing me with a sense of family, encouragement, and purpose. My research team also reinforced my commitment to staying the course and reminded me that the challenges I faced were part of a greater journey worth pursuing.

Sophomore year presented new obstacles, including persistent health issues that disrupted my academics and tested my endurance. As a mentor in the Boys and Girls Club, I was often discouraged by low attendance at planned activities, yet I learned to adapt and make the most of the time spent with the youth. During this time, I also served as a Resident Assistant, a role that enhanced my leadership, conflict resolution, and community-building skills. Balancing military obligations and family responsibilities further complicated my schedule, at times placing my academic standing in jeopardy. Many professors expressed concern about my absences, but I advocated for myself and secured an alternative path forward, proving my ability to persevere through uncertainty.

My junior year was both demanding and transformative. Balancing three jobs alongside a full course load required immense focus, discipline, and time management. While facing dismissive attitudes from some professors who questioned my abilities, I grew stronger in advocating for myself and trusting in my capabilities. Though the year was marked by constant challenges, I learned resilience, adaptability, and the importance of maintaining focus on long-term goals.

Senior year became my most defining chapter. In addition to the demands of academics, military service, and work, I embraced the new responsibility of becoming a mother. Navigating this transition while maintaining my commitments required a new level of discipline and resilience. Though the challenges were immense, this period strengthened my resolve, deepened my sense of purpose, and reminded me of the importance of balance and perseverance.

Looking back, my journey has been shaped by trials that tested my limits but also cultivated growth, strength, and determination. From mentorship and research to military service, leadership roles, and motherhood, each experience has taught me the value of resilience, adaptability, and service to others. These lessons continue to guide me as I prepare for a career in law, where I am committed to using my experiences to advocate, uplift, and create meaningful change.
