Analysis on Emergent Strategies Adrienne Marie Brown’s Emergent Strategies, enlightens readers with information on complex systems through sharing implications and experiences. One of the most interesting things that Adrienne Brown does is share her experiences at the beginning of the story. Brown shares her purpose in writing this story by implying that she was inspired while residing in Mexico. The audience can assume that Adrienne’s new-found experiences led her to create systems that are rooted from interactions. The author best expresses this as she writes, “I came to this edge of Mexico to pull a book together because, a few years ago, it was here, near this tiny portion of the massive ocean, that I began to realize how important emergent strategy, strategy for building complex patterns and systems of change through relatively small interactions (Brown pg. 2)”. It can be said that this section of the book sets the stage for the rest of Brown’s story. We can use Adrienne’s ideas regarding analyzing small problems that ultimately lead to solutions. The author illustrates her thinking when she says, “but emergence notices the way small actions and connections create complex systems, patterns that become ecosystems and societies (Brown pg. 2)”. Giving readers information on interconnected problems, helps us understand the role that they play in complex systems. Moreover, it can be said that Adrienne Brown combines life experiences and ideology to engage readers with the information she is providing about emergent strategies. Personally, I found that certain topics relate to systematic Dixon 2
issues relating to wicked problems. Processes such as emergent strategies are structures we can utilize throughout our daily lives.
