Reflection
Personally, I have enjoyed working with the youth at the Boys and Girls Club. They are all very different, and I see myself in everyone there, even if it is in the most miniscule way. I don’t feel as if I have been the most open with them, because I want them to be comfortable first, and I see that some of the kids are still questioning why we are here and what exactly we plan to do. For me, it has worked for the kids to come and talk to me because they are curious. While letting them open up to us, I slowly did the same with them so that I wasn’t overbearing or even just making them feel as if they were forced to be here. A specific example is when all the kids were explaining their day in school and how stressful the tests were before they got to the Boys & Girls club. We expressed to them that it does get better and sometimes the reward when you finish is better because in college a lot of things are more at your leisure, but making the right choices and being responsible the first time will get you far in life. A lot of them felt a lot better about school, but some were still straddling the fence about going to school or not. I think we are doing well so far, I just hope that they feel the same.
