First-Week Introduction
Hello! For this semester of research I want to focus on generating ideas, comprehension, reflection, improvement, and communication. I chose some of these because I experienced them last semester and they were very important skills, and some of them I chose because I felt like they would be important to improve on. The most exciting assignment to me seems like Lab 2 or 3 because we get to understand historical context and communities. The scrollyboarding assignment seems the most difficult because it going to take our best efforts in all the assignments to have an adequate understanding. Although this semester seems challenging, I am excited and ready!
Midterm Introduction
For this first half of the semester, I have learned how to conduct a survey and to work with a grass-root organization. With these, I have definitely learned that patience is key. I most enjoyed speaking with the community organizations at the beginning, and being able to listen to Daizjah tell us how she works. I struggled the most with our research changing a lot. It was very frustrating to put effort into one thing, and then end up having to change it to something else. I think I exceeded most at my first 3 goals, but lack in my last 2. I need to focus on goal 5 the most because I need to try to collaborate better.
Final Introduction
Over the semester there have been a lot of ups and downs within our research. We conducted a survey to public works departments within the Southern American Bottom, yet we received no responses. This was difficult to accept failure, especially on our first try. Yet, I am grateful that it happened earlier in my career to better prepare me for the future. I will definitely not take research for granted after this semester. Although we failed, We were able to conduct some usable data which helped me learn more about community engagement with water inequity within the region. I feel confident that I met all my required goals for the semester as well.
Course Goals
Goal 1 (20%)
Based on (2c): Creates ideas using knowledge from many different contexts and backgrounds.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
Use the many things I learned from CODES last semester and combine them with new experiences from this semester to make more accurate conclusions and research. | – Interviews from Community partners – Surveys from communities -Concepts/next steps for research | Have a great understanding of the experiences through our research and add to our current ideas of how to move forward. Possibly change our ideas for the future or confirm. |

This above is a question from our survey. This demonstrates this goal because I had to understand the context to know what questions to ask. We had to understand who we were asking, where they were from, what they are associated with, and so on.

Above is questions I created to interview people within the community based on what they knew about water equity. As before, I had to use contexts and backgrounds from what I knew did not work the last time, and better shape my questions. Also, I had to keep them simple to allow the most accurate responses.

Above is a transcription from our interviews. To be able to do this project and transcribe themes from each person, I had to understand how each background and context is different, as experiences may often change perspective. But, I had to also find a common ground between them all.

My group as a whole represents this, as each person is from different majors and past experience, leading us to create ideas together taking into account everyone’s perspective.
Goal 2 (20%)
Based on (3b): Understand complicated ethical issues and the relationships between them.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
This was a goal for myself that I met last semester but I want to add to it because I feel like we implement this into the real world more as we conduct actual research. I will use past and future experiences. | – Connections between communities and community partners answers to our questions -Source analyses – Miro boards(possibly) | Obviously connections between Community and community partners, but also just showing I understand the context behind the issues that these people are facing and the people that are trying to improve it. |

Above is my Source analysis 3. I believe that the discussion we had over this reading was certainly applicable for this goal, as we discussed ancient civilizations and their connections to modern society.

Above is a transcription from our interviews. Although I understood that people did experience water issues, understanding from a real person’s perspective exemplified this better. I was able to understand issues better by being able to single handedly go through the interviews and pull out the experiences that connected with the contexts of the area.

Above is a screenshot from our scrollytelling presentation in which I wanted to emphasize how our survey had failed and how we responded to this. Obviously I was upset that we gained no responses, yet I was able to step back, reflect on the climate of the world, and realize that the lack of response cannot always be assumed to be negative. I had to realize that these public works possibly had other more important time commitments, that are historically more recognizable.

Above is a picture from Lab 2 and I wanted to exemplify the results that we got and the reflections I had. I was really surprised to see how bad the water quality was there and got upset at the results, then I further understood the context of why it had to and changed my perspective. I realized that it was a good thing because It was taking all the bad sources from contaminating other bodies of water.
Goal 3 (20%)
Based on (5a): Understands the extent of research questions and is selective about the information to address them correctly.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
Looking for similar research and seeing what types of questions they asked and comparing those to our local context. Also just understanding the context of our situation so we can make hypotheses on the best questions to ask. | – Interviews -Source analyses -Possible sources -Lab 2 | Getting good and accurate responses to our surveys/interviews. |

This is an example from our survey. I had to be very careful with how I worded questions and which ones I chose because I wanted to be able to answer my research question as accurate as possible.
I don’t have a photo, but I remember having a conversation with Dr.Shea and my group about why we were conducting the types of research we were. I was very skeptic. But once I started to learn more about how research functions and understood the context of our research based in community engagement, it began to make sense as to why we were conducting interviews, surveys, and/or focus groups.

Above is a screenshot from the transcriptions I did on an interview. Based on the question that we asked about water equity within the Southern American Bottom, we chose questions that reflected our research question and transcribed themes based around that.

Above is a screenshot from our conclusion on the scrollytelling project. I believe that our next steps and reflection exemplify this goal well as we did not let our failure define us. This symbolizes a lot for our topic as we are not giving up on community engagement and will not let government dysfunction stop us from our goal. I am so excited to be able to actually work within the community and stay true to my interest in this research.
Goal 4 (20%)
Based on (7c): Reviews previously learned topics academically and experience-wise to reveal these or changed perspectives.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
Reminisce on experiences or learned topics from last semester and compare them to my new experiences. Be able to realize if my perspective was accurate or needs to be improved. | -Scrollyboard telling – Lab 3 -Lab 1 | Show how my perspective has changed or improved. Show how I learned more this semester and make connections. |

Above is the grass-root organization we work with. This is here to represent our change in projects from this semester shifting into the next semester. We chose to change our project after our failure with the original survey, accepting our fate for that aspect of outreach and changing it to something that we can work with. My perspective changed and excited me more for the new opportunities with green spaces and community.

Above is a photo from our conduction of lab 2 which consists of us testing water and soil. This lab helped me reflect on things I learned about biodiversity in the first semester. This was significant because this is not my type of thing, so I got to get hands on experience and shift my perspective on this type of work and it’s importance.

Above is an example from our scrollytelling project in which I wanted to emphasis the area we did work in. This was definitely an addition to my previous knowledge as we learned more broadly about water inequity, yet focusing on this topic made me realize that these issues are far more closer to home than I realized.

Above is a photo of my group. I just wanted to emphasis how being in a long term group project has changed my perspective to group projects. They have always irritated me in ways because I have always been pushed to pick up more work than needed, yet working with a group long run made me realize that although this may be true and much more irritating, I am grateful to have a group that shares my similar experiences currently and being able to build connections.
Goal 5 (20%)
Based on (12b): Facilitate collaboration between groups by being aware of contribution and sparking engagement.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
Work on how I communicate with others and improve on the delivery. I need to work on this a lot because I want our research group to improve and people to put equal effort into it. | -Pictures of group meetings – messages sent -example of group member putting in effort -Questions asked | At the most, people contributing more. But if that is not achievable, I feel like being able to see me trying to facilitate it because I am not in control of others efforts. |

This above is a photo of me and my group at HeartLands Conservancy. I was fostering good conversation with Daizjah, our partner, and making good eye contact. We were able to figure out a better plan for how to conduct our survey.

This above is questions that me and Lyric collaborated on for our source Analysis 2 lead. We collaborated on a google document together. We collaborated well, and in return we had a great conversation for that class period.

This is an example of when I reached out to my group mates and aimed to hold them accountable for their work. Even though it is not always positive, this is a very important part of communication and shows a lot of growth.

This is another example of me reaching out to a group mate, in which I clearly stated what they needed to complete and aimed to hold them accountable to do so. I believe this shows great collaboration, as I had to accept peoples places within the group dynamic and take action to guarantee that they could contribute in their way.
