First-Week Introduction

I chose each of my goals because I thought they would either be good goals for this class in research techniques, but also useful in our actual research. To summarize my goals, I would say that they exemplify the skills of understanding context, providing solutions, communicating efficiently, and remaining organized. I am most excited for the final project because we get to use all our new knowledge about research methods. I also think the final project will be the most challenging because I believe we have to work in groups on it, so we will be relying on and holding each other accountable. Also, I chose for all my goals to be worth 20% because they are all equally important to my success in the class, even if some skills are easily obtainable to me. I want to challenge myself so I can improve on some important skills I lack.

Midterm Introduction

I’ve learned a lot throughout just this half of the semester. I have learned better research methods for our own research, and how to conduct good research in general. I most enjoyed Dr.Bradley! I very much appreciate the way she runs the course and her charisma while teaching. Her good energy motivates me to get what I need to do done. I didn’t struggle with much during this class. I think I most excelled at goal 5 because we have done a lot of reflection work and this gives me the time to process the content the best. p[

Final Introduction

Throughout this semester, I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Bradley’s class. I believe I learned a lot about research, and feel way more comfortable in this field. I believe that I met my goals very well, as her class provided all the resources I needed to succeed and grow. The thing that surprised me the most is how many different aspects of research there are. I also didn’t expect research to be as rigorous as it is, yet rewarding. I want to be able to take most of this content with me into my future, as I am interested in being a researcher. I specifically love ethnography’s and qualitative data approaches, so I hope to do some research pertaining to these methods. The strategies I can use to guarantee that I continue to strive for these goals is be engaged during class, turn all my work in, be open-minded and ready for discussion.

Course Goals

Choose five goals from the CODES Student Learning Outcomes that you’d like to work toward. Choose goals that are relevant to the scope of this course, select artifacts/examples based on activities assigned for this course, and explain characteristics in a way that illustrates how your artifacts/examples demonstrate your progress toward the goal.

Goal 1 (20%)
Based on (2a): Systematically analyzes assumptions to develop logical plans to solve problems.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
-Awareness/understanding
of the problem to begin with
– Understand context behind the issues
-Learn more about research method and how using certain ones can be more beneficial to certain work
-Stay organized
– reflections
-Article annotations
-Reflecting on assumptions and provide evidence of how they are adequate or inadequate
– Able to provide ideas of what to do or how certain methods pertain to the issues needing solved
Provide context on if the article was helpful or there were helpful tactics within the article for my own work

The example above is from an assignment where we were told to find a survey that is scholarly and find the significance while also finding a non-scholarly survey and compare. This demonstrates this goal because through differentiating, we had to figure out which was more reliable and why.

This example above is from an assignment in class pertaining to understanding and reading a data set. This exemplifies my goal very well as we were expected to analyze and assume what she meant by her data, as well as providing feedback on how strong or weak her data was.

Above is a screenshot from my final project from this class, which consists of us researching a specific hashtag on social injustice or movements, and reflecting on the common themes and impact. This definitely helped me understand this goal better, as we had to understand the systematic impacts on Black Lives and reflect on how people have been trying to solve the problem. We were able to use other people’s experience to consider which plan we would take to make a change.

Above is an article annotation we completed over the history of Port Au Prince, Haiti and the significance it holds. This exemplifies my goal as to access this, we had to understand systemic issues and how not every region needs the same things. This definitely took a perspective change in my opinion, as something our country seems as ideal, is not ideal to them in which reflections on problem solving shifts.

Goal 2 (20%)
Based on (7a): Explores a topic in depth, yielding a rich awareness and/or little-known information indicating intense interest in the subject.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
To maintain this skill, I believe I need to prioritize my research and stay interested in it to continue to find research methods through this class. To show that I am researching in depth, I need to ensure that I complete all my readings on time so I can have fundamental conversations and receive different perspectives of thinking from my cohort as well. -Reflections
-Final project
-Top 5 assignments
-Being able to thouroughly make connections from different readings and apply that to our research
– Being able to identify challenges and strengths that certain research methods would offer for our research

The assignment below was an assignment in which we read an article about Henrietta Lacks legacy, and explained 5 interesting things. This demonstrates this goal well because I found it very interesting, and I already knew about Henrietta Lacks so I was able to compare. I also learned new things throughout the article.

Above is a slide from my final project which was about the hashtag Black Lives Matter. This exemplifies my goals well as we had to be in depth within the hashtag to acquire themes, as well as showing a prior interest as we can access how accurate the hashtag was and why it is important.

Above is a reflection I did based on an interview that I conducted for the course. I showed how I considered many aspects of the interview and awareness of what it shows, but also exemplified my learning process along the way and my interest in improving.

Above is another reflection I did within the class focused upon archival research methods. This definitely reflects my interests and my awareness of the issue, as I was able to connect this to my past knowledge of government and similar experiences I’ve had to aspects of their struggle with government resources and policies.

Goal 3 (20%)
Based on (8c):Develops clear, innovative central messages with significant supporting materials.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
– Understand context clues
– Read holistically
– Engage in the content
– Possibly use charts to connect the ideas easier for me
-Article Annotations
– Final project
-Showing understanding of the articles by summarizing the work and centralizing their message
– Centralize our ideas from throughout the semester for our project
– Be able to chose the best research methods for our project
-Ability to identify central message and supporting material

Above is an example from an article annotation that was assigned about trying new research methods and implementing these different methods into more research. This exemplifies this goal because my ideas and reflections were very centralized, and I showed my agreement with the article through this.

Above is a collage made from my final project within the class. This project exemplifies this goal accurately, as we transcribed central themes from the hashtag, and used posts as evidence for these within this collage.

Above is a screenshot from an article annotation within the class. This shows this goal very clearly, as I delivered a central idea regarding the article and used evidence within the article to back up my reflection and perspective ideals.

Above is a transcription from an interview that I did during this course. I transcribed it and highlighted the important information to grab to generate a central theme. I generated the themes that my interviewee was very involved in college life and college was an overall positive experience for them.

Goal 4 (20%)
Based on (11a): Evaluates texts’ scholarly significance to apply reading to other contexts or issues.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
– DO READING ON TIME!!!
– Use critical thinking skills as I read
-Listen to instruction from DR.Bradley and take inspiration from the connections she makes
-Article annotations -Providing feedback
– Being able to reflect on methods and connect them to our current research
– Explaining concepts

Above is my completion conformation from the CITI training that I did. This shows the goal very well because we had to read many articles about research and use this to pass quizzes to show that we are able to conduct ethical research.

Above is a reflection completed within the class that aims to explain the experience of the Gullah Geechee tribe with marginalization and gentrification. I think this is a great example of this goal as I was able to understand the significance of the article, and connect it to other similar experiences and my past knowledge of this tribe. We were also able to understand the historical significance behind it.

Above is a screenshot from a reflection I did based on research and bias. I think this accurately represents my goal by reflecting on the significance of research and position, while also connecting to the contexts of me being a researcher. Additionally, I was able to understand how bias can make your research weaker, emphasizing the importance of awareness.

Above is a screenshot from an article annotation I did on data cleansing. I was able to understand the importance of data cleansing, but also see it from a different perspective in which they do not believe in ‘cleaning”. I was able to connect this to other contexts such as my own experiences, and understand how blinding this term could be for researchers unaware.

Goal 5 (20%)
Based on (13a): Demonstrates a thorough understanding of context, audience, and purpose.

What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal?
– Reflect on the textbook and the audience they subject to
– Practicing Philosophy in my work
-reflections
-Top 5 assignments
-Ability to make connections to other things such as past experiences or past learning strategies
Improve my research strategies throughout the course

This is a reflection that I did on an article that explained research methods that worked for them and their experiment. I thoroughly showed this goal because I accurately reacted to this article and gave my own opinion. This shows that I understand context and purpose because I couldn’t have given opinions on the topic without fully comprehending.

Above is a screen shot from a top 5 assignment that I completed. I know that this shows my understanding of purpose and context, as I was able to reflect upon the reading and connect it to my past and current experiences.

Above is a screenshot from the dataset assignment we did. This exemplifies my goal well as we had to understand the contexts of what Dr. Bradley gave us about her dataset, to be able to understand how effective and accurate the data is.

Above is a screen shot from a reflection based on research in general that we did at the beginning of the year. I believe that this even shows my understanding of context before the course as well as during, as I was able to reflect on multiple points of conducting research, and apply it to my own experiences.
