I was born in Mexico and moved to Alabama as a toddler. I grew up in Alabama. It is my home; it’s my sweet home, Alabama.
My plans for my time at SIUE are to learn about my career and explore different careers because I want to change in the future. I want to have fun and not just study in a library all day. I want to make more friends and experience the true college student life while being responsible. I also want to explore the state of Illinois. Since I’m from Alabama, everything in Illinois is new.
My career goals while at SIUE are to develop skills that can help me in my college career and everyday life. I also want to gain teamwork and global thinking skills. By the end of my college career, I hope to have the skills to talk and write professionally. I also hope to have the ability to advocate for myself to become a strong, powerful businesswoman who can manage and control her workspace. Specifically, I aim to specialize in business administration and believe that SIUE’s CODES will be instrumental in helping me achieve this goal. I am expected to graduate in 2028 with a bachelor’s in business administration.
I enjoy spending my time outside walking in the park with nature. It helps me relax and take a minute to breathe and not overthink but just feel the breeze of the air. I also love to read and go book shopping, but it’s the best thing for me, especially when I go out with my friends and we go book shopping and get brunch together. I’m not a fast reader, but reading has improved my reading skills, and I am learning new words. Working out has also become one of my more recent hobbies for the past 3 years. I use it to burn stress because school and life can become stressful.
In my life, I have overcome many obstacles, but the biggest one was learning a whole new language at the age of 5 when I started school, only to discover that I had a tough time learning grammar and reading but not thinking much about it. When I was in seventh grade, one day, I was tested for Dyslexia. A few weeks later I had a teacher talk to explain that I had a learning disability and that’s why I was having a hard time in English. For the first time in my life, something made sense. So it wasn’t that I dumb, but I had a learning disability. After talking with my parents, I discovered that my father also has Dyslexia. But like me people can’t see you have a learning disability. To them we look normal but on the inside we are struggling and nervous that the teacher may pick us to read aloud or that during the drivers test we confess our right from left. But at the end of the day i decided that i want to follow my dream in pursuing higher education even if it is crazy hard and i may have a crying days but i want a degree. To me it means I didn’t let my Dyslexia crush my dream. It made me find new strategies that worked with my Dyslexia. Even though I can’t get rid of my Dyslexia, I found ways to work with it to improve my learning methods.
