Introduction

There were many skills and content I learned and developed during my first half of the semester. In the beginning, we were introduced to different research methods. We then talked about anthropology and learned about the history associated with it. We did many assignments so far such as syllabus building in which we worked as a class to construct the syllabus with assignments that fit our goals and due dates for them. What I enjoyed the most were the in class interview assignments on identity. Being able to interview my peers and learn what identity means to them was fun, interesting, and bonding. I struggled the most with the source analysis. Sometimes it would be hard for me to find an interesting source that fit the theme. I believe I excelled the most in my critical and creative thinking skills since there were many assignments in which I could work on those skills. I wish to be able to work more on my ethical reasoning skills during the second half of the semester. As the semester came to an end, I feel my critical and creative thinking are one of the skills I was able to master. We had many assignments that gave me the chance to improve in that area and I excel at it now. There were not many assignment I had to take risks in because most of our assignments were the opinions of our or others!

Critical and Creative Thinking (20%)

[Describes problems clearly, delivering all relevant information & systematically and methodically analyze my own and others assumptions to develop logical plans to solve problems]

Story Map of Story Telling Project

The picture above is a draft of a story map I made for our digital story telling project. This helped to build my creative thinking because it allowed me to visualize and come up with a sructure for our video project.

Syllabus Building
Syllabus Building

Both of the pictures above from us building our syllabus. This helped with my criticial and creative thinking because we together had to discuss and come up with assignments for us to do throughout the semester and connect it with our goals and our research questions.

Ethical Reasoning (20%)

[Identifies and analyzes my own core beliefs and reflects upon my origin and recognizes multilayered ethical issues and the cross relationships among them]

Above is a draft of my research proposal for CODES 123. I chose the topic based upon my motivation and passion of fighting against the systematic racism that is ingraved in America. This improves my ethical reasoning skills because I am analyzing a multilayered problem and the relationship among its origin and the residue left behind from it.

Parasite Reflection

Above is a picture of my reflection of the movie Parasite. This assignment helped me to build upon my ethical reasoning because I had to examine to side of the story within the movie to understand the underlying messages and themes.

This is a movie reflection on Moonlight. The reasoning behind why this assignment has improved my ethical skills is similar to that of the Parasite movie reflection, but this reflection is moreso focused on finding and accepting identity which is centers around identifying my own core beliefs in my goals.

This source analysis is about community and identity and how the two influence each other. I connected this to our CODES program and how it feels like a community to me. This helped my ethical reasoning because I had to both examine my own views about identity and community and then analyze the relationship between community and identity.

Global Learning (20%)

[Uses deep knowledge of the historic and modern role and differential effects of human organizations and actions on global systems to develop and advocate for informed, appropriate action to solve complex problems]

This is a reflection of our class talk with our community partner member Dorothy. This falls under my Global Learning goal because we learned about how effective the YWCA is within the Alton community and the things they need to be a better organization.

Intercultural Knowledge and Competence (20%)

[Shows a deep awareness of the complexities of factors significant to people from a different culture, whether those factors are related to history, morals, politics, communication techniques, the economics, or beliefs and practices. Asks challenging questions about different cultures and seeks out and articulates responses that take into account various cultural perspectives.]

Storyboard Project

Above is a video of our Storyboard project. In this Porject I worked alongside my fellow classmates to help tell a story for Annette Campbell. During this project, we got to see and know the mindset of an Alton community member who also works alongside the YWCA. With Annette’s faith, she was able to see problems wihtin the community on a different scale and viewed some of them as spirtual issues. As a follower of Christ, I was able to understand the viewpoints she had and her mindset. But she viewed racial issues in a different way than me, but I was still able to understand her viewpoint. This project helped me develop this skill by allowing me to interview someone of my cultural and beliefs, but showing me that there were things we viewed differently.

This a draft of interview questions from CODES 123. In this assignment, we focused on figuring out what community meant to others in our class. This falls under Intercultural Knowledge and Competence because it involves me getting the views and beliefs on the definition of community from people of different backgrounds and cultures.

Skills for Lifelong Learning (20%)

[Pursues knowledge and educational experience beyond the classroom and reviews prior learning inside and outside of the classroom to reveal significantly changed perspectives about educational and life experiences.]

Volunteering at LifeWise in St. Louis
Volunteering at LifeWise

The two picture above are of me vounteering with my club’s (NBASLH) president. At LifeWise, we helped restock the shelves of the food pantry, reorganize the clothes in the clothing area and hang up new clothes that were donated, and also refill the shelves with more hygiene products. While volunteering at LifeWise and seeing all of the amazing things it offers. LifeWise has a pantry in which they sell food but for a very low price. For example, they sell poultry products for $3 comapred to their original price of about $13-$15. They also act similarly to a GoodWill with their clothing area. They sell clothing for a very low and afforable price along side, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, feminine products, and more!

They also have an early childcare center and before and after programs for elementary and middle school children. For their high school children, they also offer them an after school program in which they spend a couple of hours learning life skills such as cooking, sewing, doing laundry, etc. In exchange, the high schoolers recieve points for doing these activites and they can cash in their points at the end of the week for actual money!

All of the amazing resources LifeWise offers helps me to brainstorm how I want to help YWCA in becoming a better asset for their community. The learning I made outside of class helped me come up with potential ideas for things to do inside of class.

Notes of Observational Study

Above is notes from an observational study done in CODES 123. This falls under Skills for Lifelong learning because this observational study assignment is similar to the differnt study methods we go through in research teams.
