Major
I’m a History major here at SIUE. I’m interested in taking a variety of historical courses to make my historical skill set well-rounded.
My career interests
Before I decided I wanted to be a teacher, Anesthesiology interested me. I felt more drawn to it for holistic and financial reasons. Being able to ease someone’s pain during a medical surgery or operation felt important. However, I have decided to shift my interest to teaching and aiding young minds during their teenage years. Though these two fields are completely different, I believe my reasons for helping others and aiding remain the same.
Completed Courses
English Composition I
I completed English Composition I last semester. I learned about how to properly write a paper. I also focused on time management skills in this class, working on research papers and essays. In this class, I had to ask my professor what he looked for in a good writer, which will help me across many fields.
History of Black America 1865 to the present
In this course, I learned about Black History in America. Many stories and lessons I encountered in this course, I knew little of or had never heard of. This course was my favorite many because of how active the class is. We discussed our homework and class discussions every day. Professor Bryan Jack made this course fun, intriguing, and tolerable despite the saddening material.
Interpersonal Communication
This helped me with my study skills. I had to prioritize what textbook information was worth taking into account. I needed to take detailed notes and write papers in a style I haven’t encountered. This course helped me with communicating and interviewing others. I had to do a relationship interview, trying to make sense of my relationship with someone close to me and relating it to the course’s textbook material.
Introduction to Black Literary and Cultural Studies
This course challenged me to read and stay on top of studying different poems, small reads, and historical events. The GAME course made me understand how to navigate through sources of classroom media. I had to make small quizzes to memorize the material. The GAME/FAME course keeps students engaged with the responsibility of studying.
The Dramatic Experience
This course would be my second-favorite course. I didn’t know much about Theater, but I usually raised my hand to answer questions when Professor Klingensmith called on someone. I enjoyed making renders, sonnets, projects, and daily in-class activities. Professor Klingensmith made this course fun and interesting, and showed the artistic beauty in theater, which I greatly enjoyed.
