First-Week Introduction
I chose each of my five goals because this semester I want to work harder when it comes to analyzing research and understanding complex concepts. I feel as if last semester I was able to work on those skills a little bit but I didn’t really grasp that opportunity. I want to do better on that this semester. To make this semester a success, I really want to focus more on having good organizational skills as well as time management skills. I believe that with a combination of those two, this semester will be off to a great start! An assignment that makes me excited for this semester would be reading the Psychology of Groups assignment because I feel like it will be really helpful when it comes to taking surveys and conducting research.
Midterm Introduction
During the first half of the semester, I learned a lot about researching and surveying for information. One thing that I would say I enjoyed the most was when we were doing the ‘find a survey’ assignment because it helped me know what to look out for and add onto my own surveys we were making in the other CODES class. One thing I’ve struggled with has been getting all of my work done and the readings completed by the time they are due. Time management is definitely on the list of things to work on throughout the rest of the semester!. However, I was able to work through it and get the work done to the best of my ability. Throughout the second part of the semester, I want to continue working on achieving my goals and furthering my education through this class.
Final Introduction
As this semester comes to a close, I’ve learned a lot about surveying, collecting, and organizing data. I was able to put these skills from this course into my other CODES and non-CODES courses and get to know the in-depth perspective of research from both the researcher and the responsee. For future courses, I want to be able to keep these skills and use them to gather and organize data, even if it’s not for a research based project. Though there is always room for improvement, I feel as if this semester has been a big one for me when it comes to learning more about myself and how I work in research environments.
Course Goals
Goal 1 (20%)
Based on 2c: I will incorporate information from multiple sources aside from the one(s) given
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
I will focus more on incorporating more sources into my writing. Instead of just using a given source/domain, I will find more of them on my own and use those as well to get my points across. | Reflections Top 5 Assignments Article Annotations Find a Survey Assignment | In each of the examples there will be evidence and/or references from sources other than the provided media. |

In this example (Reflection 1), I used information from a separate source than the one provided. I did this in an effort to justify my claims by giving other opinions and facts.

In this example (Article Annotation 1), I provided evidence from a study done at Bucharest University about AI. I did this in order to further prove the results of Cavazos and their colleagues finds as well as justify my claim that Cavazos’s study wasn’t unique.

In this example from the Chapters 4 and 9 Top 5 Assignment, I used my own experience as evidence to support my claims about the concept/topic. I did this to combat a point that was made within the source material that seemed to believe that the research and conclusions made from it were new.

In the Find a Survey Assignment, I found my non-scholarly source from a website of bloggers that I don’t believe that many people, if any, would know of or draw information from. I did this in order to get away from the classic sources that I feel as if many people would’ve been using.
Goal 2 (20%)
Based on 5a: I will define research questions using information I find to address them
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
I will be able to answer and give context behind research questions that I may encounter throughout the CODES classes | Article Annotations Reflections Library Day Reflection Final Project | Success of this goal would look like research and its results being provided within my examples |

In this example (Article Annotation 2), I analyzed the given source and was able to put it into context with known research tactics as well as give a explanation of what Rawson and Munoz were trying to prove within the article.

In this example (Reflection 3), I used the context from our readings about groupthink and social loafing and applied it to the Challenger explosion to answer the research questions about how those two psychology concepts contributed to the explosion and the aftermath.
When we went to the library, since we were working on creating survey questions and putting enough context behind them for people to answer the questions, it was easier for me to see from an outside perspective as well when it comes to answering research questions asked of me. I was able to use this knowledge going forward through the semester when answering research questions in the reflections and article annotations.

In this example, from my draft of my part of the final project, I answered research questions and analyzed different Tiktok videos in order to find common themes and answer our general research question of how people are reacting to the hashtag #cutewinterboots.
Goal 3 (20%)
Based on 7a: I will go deeper into topics and find information on them that isn’t as well-known in an effort to better educate myself and others
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
I will know more than just the basics about the topics. I believe that I will be able to achieve this goal based upon my interests as I search to learn more about the topics we cover | Top 5 Assignments Reading Assignments Notes Peer Interviews CITI Training | The examples I chose will showcase how I have been able to dig deeper into topics and will also include evidence of me searching out to learn more. |

These are the results of the CITI Training I completed in order to learn more about researching responsibily. This shows the dedication to ensuring a safe and healthy research environment for both myself and the people I’m observing.

In this example from the Top 5 Assignment for Chapters 1 and 2, I went deeper into the example from the reading and trying to get deeper into the study to really get the full insight of the study and the researcher’s motivations.

This is an example of my notes from Chapter 2 of Give Method a Chance. I tried to go more into the chapter and analyze it as well as relate it back to my research projects for both this class and the research team class.

When interviewing one of my friends about her college experience, I wanted to bounce each question off of the past ones as well as her responses. As seen in this example, I took what she was saying about being at an HBCU and how it’s different and included that with my next question of living on campus and her social life with the community that she was speaking on in her previous response.
Goal 4 (15%)
Based on 8a: I will organize my data, presentations, and notes in a concise and cohesive manner
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
I will work on the organization of my thoughts and ideas. Throughout the semester, I will be more concise about what I am presenting and how I am presenting it. | Data Review Assignment Notes Article Annotations Organization Reflection | These examples will show that my work is organized and presented in a concise manner. They will have proper grammar and will be in the instructed format. |

These are my notes form when the class asked questions about Dr. Bradley’s dissertation study for the Dataset Review assignment. I organized them in this fashion to make the different points easier for me to find and for me to organize my thoughts and the facts about the study.

This is my Article Annotation on the Gullah Geechee Families article. I organized it based on the MLA format with the annotated citation and a brief description of the article at the beginning. This helped me to stay consistent with my article annotations throughout the semseter and have them all be in the same format.
In past semesters, a main issue I had within my classes was staying organized and on top of my work. For this semester however, I wanted to work more on my organization and keep myself consistent with my work and how it was organized/formatted. Throughout this semester, I feel as though I have accomplished that goal for the most part. Each assignment I complete is labeled with both the class as well as the name of the assignment so that I can come back later and easily find the assignment if needed. I have also been keeping up with my due dates and getting my work in even when I’m not in class or if I have another extenuating factor. I would like to continue working on my organization and formatting in future semesters and I hope to improve more from here.
Goal 5 (25%)
Based on 13a: I will be aware of and present using the knowledge of my audience, purpose, and context
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
I will work on the the comprehension needed for many of the assignments in the syllabus, especially when it comes to topics that I am not well-versed in. | Final Project Reflections Drafted Interview Questions | These examples will showcase my ability to observe and provide for the audience that the assignment is supposed to be presented to. |

I wrote this example (Reflection 2) around the same time the class was doing the Dataset Review assignment. We were learning about data cleaning and the ways that it can positively and negatively affect research results. Therefore, I wrote this example in the context related to what we were learning in class to reflect on how we can improve on researching in the future.

For my final project, I knew my audience (the class) wouldn’t want to just be reading words off of a slide. So instead, I added photos of the Tiktoks that I was analyzing so that they could look at the photos instead of just words as I went more in depth with my verbal explanations.

For the second slide that I made for the final project, I made sure to keep with the same idea that the audeicne wouldn’t want to read paragraph on paragraph on the side, so I kept the comments and observations I made short and split up so that the words wouldn’t be as overwhelming for the audience.

These are the questions that I asked my friend in the interview that I performed. Since I know her very well and I am more aware of some of her situations and experiences since she’s been in college, I was able to tailor the questions more so that I was still getting the information that I wanted while providing context for those who don’t know her full story.

In this example (Reflection 7), I was conducting research on greenspaces and greenspace usage around the same time and I knew that people who could look at my reflections and my work may have wanted to see the connections between the two classes and the inforamtion I can share between both. So, I included the comparison to my team’s research in an effort to bridge that gap for the audience.
