Class Portfolio

For the spring 2024 semester, here are ways I have demonstrated how I believe I have achieved an A in our research team class. I have some skills that I am already proficient at, and also some skills that I am not as confident with and think that I have improved on.

5B: Accesses information using effective, well-designed search strategies and appropriate sources.

This section will be worth 20% of my grade for the semester.

In my words, this learning outcome means that I have used skillful research strategies to find informative sources. I have demonstrated this skill when choosing/adding resources within our necessary knowledge document, or when choosing a website/article we have used for a Source Analysis. Additionally, I have demonstrated this throughout our labs. I have chosen credible sources with informative topics based on what we are discussing/learning about. The websites/articles I added to the necessary knowledge document, have helped my classmates and I further our research in working with the Missouri Botanical Gardens. I believe that I am okay at finding sources. However I tend to pick the first few sources that I see, so I would like to try to research more in order to find real, credible sources.

Here are examples of sources that I have found that are added to our Necessary Knowledge Document. I found these articles in order for our group to potentially use some for our source analysis, and to gain more knowledge on botany and how it relates to indigenous knowledge.

8A: Uses clear organizational patterns and is skillful at presenting content cohesively.

This section will be worth 20% of my grade for the semester.

In my words, this learning outcome means that I have been able to present information in a skilled way and my work is organized proficiently. I have demonstrated this skill when being a leader in discussions about our SA’s. When presenting the main points and having a conversation about the SA’s, I will have an organized list of points that need to be discussed. I will present these within our research team with my partner with a proficient approach and a clear understanding of the resource used for the SA. I believe that I have not mastered this skill yet, so this is an area I would like to grow and improve in.

Here is an example of my source analysis bullet points when I was presenting to our class. Even though I was still nervous presenting, I feel as though I did a really good job talking about my source.

10C: Uses quantitative information to support arguments and draw logical conclusions

This section will be worth 20% of my grade for the semester.

In my words, this learning outcome means that I will be able to pull quantitative data in with qualitative data. I will be able to combine the two in a way that shows their connection. I will demonstrate this mainly in our labs. I will be able to use the data we receive, how the lab is executed, and draw conclusions.

I feel as though I have not been able to demonstrate this skill yet. However, I believe after we get our data back from our survey, I will be able to demonstrate this skill.

12C: Works independently towards goals by contributing and meeting deadlines.

This section will be worth 20% of my grade for the semester.

In my words, this learning outcome means that I will work by myself in order to complete my work on time. I will demonstrate this by always turning my assignments in on time (unless there are unforeseen circumstances). I will strive to do my best work. I will make sure I turn in my SA’s, Lab Analysis’, ePortfolios, and videos on or before the due dates. I tend to be very good at this skill and it is something I would like to keep strengthening. This will force me to not procrastinate on my homework.

Our first source analysis was due on 1/24. I turned it in before the due date. Additionally, I have turned in all of my other SA’s on time, and any other assignments we have had.

13 C: Uses language to skillfully communicate with clarity and fluency.

This section will be worth 20% of my grade for the semester.

In my words, this learning outcome means that my language will be clear and will flow smoothly will demonstrate this skill within my SA’s, Lab Analysis’, and when being a discussion leader. I am okay at this skill, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I would like to make sure my topics/discussions are easy to read/listen to because of my fluency. I would like to improve my grammar and language skills.

Here is an example of my source analysis bullet points when I was presenting to our class. Even though I was still nervous presenting, I feel as though I did a really good job talking about my source.

Thanks,

Kasey Tipton
