Hey girl hey! My name is Kyra Willimas. I am a freshman at SIUE in my second semester. Our research team with Dr. Hildebrandt has educated me on a lot concerning the Missouri botanical gardens so far. As we are taking our wicked problem head on. I have learned so much in the time I have been here such as learning new things and perfecting some things I already knew. I struggled in the beginning of this semester just because this is a very new experience for me and learning how to navigate that was challenging. I think I’ve come a long way but still have a lot to go. I have mostly enjoyed the friendships this school has gotten me and more specifically the best friends that the CODES program has introduced me to.
~Goals~
2a. Systematically analyzes assumptions to develop logical plans to solve problems. (20%)
Through this past semester I have gotten to see and learn so many different things and different approaches in looking at data sets and analyzing data. Below I will show you the different steps and approaches we went through to look at our data from Dr. Smith class, CODE123. that helped in preparations for our surveys and our focus groups.
Survey Dr. Smith.docx : This is a survey we conducted in Dr. Smiths class as a sort of “beginner” survey before working on our ones for the gardens.
5a: Defines the scope of research questions effectively and selects information cogently to address them. (20%)
As the whole goal of our research team is to research. So, this is very new to me but with the help of my fellow classmates and my amazing professor Dr. Hildebrandt, I have learned a lot. I wanted to show this in some photos we took as we were researching at the herbarium within the garden, on our first trip over there this semester. I want to also show more of this when we start conducting our surveys and interviews for the garden.
7c. Reviews prior learning inside and outside of the classroom to reveal significantly changed perspectives about educational and life experiences. (20%)
I chose this specific goal because I think it is important to be engaged in and out of the classroom, however that may look different for different people. I wanted to show this goal in my research team specifically because it is important to work as a team outside of the class period. This specific assignment required us to do work by ourselves and with each other outside of the class. Below is the rough draft of our survey and interview questions. This shared doc has different links to important websites that would be helpful for creating our survey.
Included a picture from when we researched in the Herbarium at the gardens.
8: oral Communication (20%)
Oral communication has been a big goal of mine that I wanted to succeed in. With being able to communicate it can open lots of doors for me in my future career as a nurse. To show this I am going to link in our final lab from our video that we made to present to the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Talking about what we have done so far this semester with Dr. Hildebrandt and the Gardens. We have a goal of working more with the garden next semester and we are so excited to see what plans come up in the future.
I want to work on my writing and understanding the reading we read during class. In order to show this work, I will make rough drafts for my source analysis’. I want to show this goal through many ways, and one is the surveys that me and my subgroup are going to create. Through analyzing the results, we get back from the surveys we are conducting. I will also show this in my portfolio with taking what we are collecting on our own, through the labs we are conducting at the Gardens, but so far, we have not done any labs so far. So as of right now I will show the difference between my first Source analysis and my latest one of this semester to show the progress that has already happened. I still want to show more progress as the semesters continues.
