found that in one area that siue lacks in the resources is the fact that the campus is kind off to itself. Like a mini city within Edwardsville, which is not a bad thing at all and is kind of nice. But that brings struggles for students without cars or money for gas money.
In my spatial mapping I did, I sought out to see how far away the necessities were for a college student, the nearest gas station, target, gym, and Walmart. Each one ranging from 2 minutes away which was the gym on campus here, or 10 minutes away which was the nearest Walmart. Now that is not a bad drive for a student to make any time, they want, but if the student does not have a car that becomes more challenging for them. Now we do have options such as the metro bus, or a bicycle. If you choose the bicycle then your 10-minute drive turns into a 20-minute ride. The bus on the other hand only leaves every 30 minutes so you have to take that into account, the bus fee, and all the stops it makes on the way. So honestly not a very cost or time effective route to be honest. But students have to do those routes every day because they don’t have resources for cars.
I think this is a good example of spatial injustice, and a way to combat it could be to set up a special bus just for siue students to use for free, since we already pay lots to go to the university. Being a student is stressful enough and I think that with the necessity things are further away that it just adds stress unto students lives.
