My name is Nikyra Wheaton and I am a sophomore student at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). I am currently double majoring in Psychology and Sociology and have the ultimate goal of later obtaining a master’s degree in clinical psychology or School Psychology to become a high school psychologist. I am interested in advocating for one’s mental health and showing up for them in a way to help create a healthy lifestyle. I was awarded the Community-Oriented Digital Engagement Scholars (CODES) full tuition scholarship which allows me to attend school without worrying about how I’ll pay for it. Being in CODES have taught me how to work in the uncomfortable and open my mind up to learn something new. Being in this program have granted me the opportunity to partner with Jackie Joyner-Kersee Food, Agriculture and Nutrition Innovation Center (JJK FAN) to come up with an educational plan to expand the campus and how to get others involved in environmental conservation and learning the importance of biodiversity in urban greenspaces.. Also, I recently joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. which is an organization that allows me to advocate for the community in multiple ways. What stuck out to me in joining this organization was being able to advocate for educational development and physical and mental health. Education the foundation everyone needs to pursue life and reach long-term goals. But more importantly, I see education as a tool to empower others. Also, I’m passionate about creating safe spaces for individuals to heal from trauma and navigate life’s everyday challenges. Mental health is a vital part of overall well-being. Advocacy is an important part of who I am with a heart to help people.
