First-Week Introduction
I chose these five goals because they challenge me to strengthen my current skills and learn new skills that will benefit me in my future career. I’m excited about the final project this semester since it’s different from the typical ones I’m used to. Therefore, I’m excited about this new experience and gaining more knowledge from these assignments, which may be more challenging and comprehensive. Still, I would gain a deeper understanding from them. A primary goal I am working towards is better time management because I’ve learned that time is the key to studying efficiently.
Midterm Introduction
I’ve learned much about effective research and use it daily when finding sources. This is one thing I enjoyed. I liked looking around for resources and finding out which was most reliable because I would learn so much by just reading through the sources, and I found them very interesting. I’m still learning about using past information to solve new problems. I’m still experimenting with this and prioritizing it for the second half of class.
Final Introduction
Reflecting on this past semester I learned a great amount of skills in this class. I have achieved all of my goals that I set for this semester, and I worked very hard to get to this point. These goals and new skills will help me through out college, in my future classes, internships, and jobs. I enjoyed all of the new experiences and challenges I encountered this semester and this will help me for the next three years, medical school, and my future career.
I believe that I deserve an A in this class because I have achieved the goals I set for this class at the beginning of the semester and more. I turn in all of my work in on time and I am always engaged in the assignments. I have been committed to my work and to my group, and have shown dedication in this course. I have improved on and learned new skills and gained new ones that I will use for the rest of college and my future career.
Course Goals
Goal 1 (20%)
(8b. Uses compelling, appropriate delivery techniques): I want to speak without being too fast or slow while using nonverbal techniques.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
-Practicing presenting with my group -Ask others for feedback and advice on nonverbal skills while presenting | -Collaborating in group projects -Participating in discussions -Final Project -Interview | -Feeling confident while presenting and using various skills while speaking verbally and nonverbally. |

My final presentation improved my speaking skills. I practiced my presentation a few times with my partner, and we gave each other feedback and pointers on how to improve.

These are my note cards, and I find having them crucial and extremely helpful when presenting. They help calm any last-minute nerves and ensure I don’t leave out any essential information.
Participating in Top 5 discussions improved my speaking techniques because they caused me to reflect on discussion questions and base them on the week’s readings. These discussions made me feel more confident, and I started speaking in class more often.

This interview also aided in my oral speaking. I maintained eye contact, asked questions, and listened to the responses, which gave me more practice with speaking and nonverbal techniques.
Goal 2 (20%)
Based on 7c. Reviews prior learning inside and outside the classroom to reveal significantly changed educational and life experiences perspectives. When evaluating a problem, value all perspectives and use prior knowledge and expertise to aid in coming up with a solution.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
-Value prior assignments as learning opportunities. -Understand the meaning of each experience I encounter. | -Top 5 -Finding a survey -Dataset Review -Article Annotation | -Refers to knowledge gained from past assignments or experiences and uses it to aid in finding a new solution. |

After doing several top 5s, I have progressively gotten better and faster at completing them, and I base each new top 5 on the previous ones that I did.

While completing this assignment, I used context clues and my knowledge from past assignments to help evaluate the dataset. I learned how to code/assess these datasets more efficiently.

This is the find a survey assignment, and it helped me apply what I had experienced and learned to complete it. Analyzing these surveys strengthened my research methods as well. I assessed the survey questions I realized how much I have learned based on past experiences, this caused me to see problems from multiple viewpoints and asses them accordingly.

I learned a lot from this article annotation assignment because I had to read and evaluate the text based on how I would in previous classes or assignments. Doing these article annotations required me to think about my previous knowledge on decoding and reflect on this article accordingly.
Goal 3 (20%)
Based on (6a. Articulates own cultural rules and biases and recognizes and responds to biases.): Using my knowledge about my culture and identity to realize how these biases can relate to interactions and other leading factors.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
– Communicate with others and ask about their viewpoints on stereotypes. -Reflecting on my cultural background and realizing how it can affect multiple outcomes. | -Reflections -Survey Research -CITI Training -Henrietta Lacks Top 5 -Find a Survey | – communicate and asking others for their advice/views. -Using and reflecting on my own experiences in my work. |

While completing this assignment, I considered reflecting on one’s biases and culture, which can impact what one sees and perceives.

This top 5 assignment made me reflect on how race and ethnicity play a role in research. I realized how my culture and biases gave me a point of view to see how others can perceive this research.

Finding a survey assignment made me think about my own culture and biases, as well as the reasoning/design of the survey and how it can be perceived from different perspectives.

Also, the CITI Training is related to understanding our own biases.
Goal 4 (20%)
Based on (9c Implements solutions to address multiple contextual factors. Consider solutions before implementing them to ensure they don’t domino or have an adverse effect.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
-Brainstorming or mapping when finding a solution – Research all factors to ensure various perspectives can be considered. | -Reflections -Final Project -Dataset review (understanding that profile) -Find a Survey | -Take notes while reading, researching, and considering all factors when developing solutions. |

To complete the data set analysis, I had to consider all factors to ensure that all details and information were considered.

This survey assignment required me to research the context and previous information before evaluating the survey itself. This ensured that I wouldn’t misjudge the survey, and I learned how vital it is to know the whole idea before you dive into a situation.

This reflection made me realize how crucial it is to consider all factors and viewpoints before making a decision. One small mistake can cause a huge error in the long run, just by skipping one small thing.

While completing the slides for our powerpoint, I realized I had to research and gain context clues to ensure I was getting the main idea. Therefore, we would minimize biases and include multiple different perspectives.
Goal 5 (20%)
Based on (2a. Systematically analyzes assumptions to develop logical plans to solve problems.): Consider all outcomes when coming up with a series of solutions to solve a problem ultimately.
What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
-Ask for opinions and consider different points of view for a series of solutions. | -Top 5 -Article Annotation -Reflection -Final Project | -Having a deeper understanding of the problem and a thorough solution with multiple parts to it (not just a straightforward solution). |

I had to read parts of the article more than once to ensure a complete understanding so that I could reflect on it accurately. Therefore, I wouldn’t leave any crucial parts out and could then consider all factors in my paper.

For this reflection, I thought about when I met with my group, and we all gave each other our opinions and feedback on our work. This gives the researcher a sense of how they’re doing and can help ensure all factors are considered when interpreting a solution.

This assignment helped me gain a deeper understanding on research methods. Ethnography itself uses multiple viewpoints, contexts, and it’s vital that one understands the information and considers all factors.

My final project brought up the topic of struggles of first-generation americans, and to fully understand and come up with ways to solve the situation, we had to fully understand all views and factors of the situation.
