Reflection #5

My experience on-site was overall amazing. I enjoyed my own company while brainstorming ideas for my final project. This experience allowed me to really sit and think about interview questions. This is all so new to me. I’ve never had to interview anyone let alone did a project on interviewing individuals. I enjoyed attending Dr. Martinez class every Tuesday to come in and chat. This class overall has helped me grow as a student. Every week I always look forward to coming to this class. My experience on-site allowed me to break out of my comfort zone/ shell and become active. I learned how to interview individual’s, how to code and transcribe interviews, and now I am working on my final project. I think the hardest part for me had to be actually going up to people and ask them if they would help me with my research about answering a few questions. I’m so shy in a way and especially because they were older, I was a bit scared. I overcame my fear of course and collected 7 interviews which I was so proud of. I would have kept going but I definitely didn’t feel like transcribing 10+ interviews. What I learned about working with others is my choice of words. I had to have specific questions and word them specifically so others wouldn’t take any of my questions offensive. While working on this project I found out that I wasn’t able to interview individual’s that weren’t 18 and over. Which now makes so much sense to me. While working with others I learned that we all are different, but in a good way. When me and my group came together for our meetings, we all shared our OWN knowledge which is also a uphold hand within our group because some of us knew things that others didn’t. This allowed us each to individually speak on our behalf freely and respectfully. What I learned about myself is that I actually do enjoy nature. Even with attending the Monarch tagging event that Heartlands Conservancy hosted I felt so connected with nature. After attending this event, I was inspired and decided to take me and my dog on a walk to the Cahokia Mounds Stairs. The event itself allowed me to connect with nature which helped me really feel like I matter to the world, and it also allowed me to see the beauty in nature. I learned that many people were involved in water conservation because of the way they grew up. The interviewees allowed me to understand because of the fact that they didn’t have technology they had no choice but to go outside and explore nature. I sort of figured their age group was going to have different responses due to the way their generation grew up. Another thing I learned while conducting interviews was that time was a sort of hold against the people who don’t participate in water conservation activities. This was the goal for my project. To get a better understanding on what’s stopping individuals from participating in water conservation practices.
