CODE 121 Class Portfolio

Introduction

My first semester of college has been hard. I had plenty of joys, but I also struggled. I found plenty of time to get everything I want out of a day, but I was rarely responsible about completing my work or doing the things I needed to do like chores.

In CODE 121, life was even harder. The class is different from others in the way the grading is organized. There aren’t traditional tests like my CS 140 class had. We had a grading contract that we made through our own choices. I struggled to stay responsible for the work.

For my future semesters, I plan to develop strong responsibility skills. I plan to drop my bad habits of procrastinating in favor of a more comfortable college experience.

Goal 1 – Uses language to skillfully communicate with clarity and fluency.  30%

My first artifact for this goal is my completed Digital Project #1. This document has been reviewed and it’s been given feedback that has been implemented. I have learned more about how to write at the appropriate level for my classes. Next time, I will be writing a little better than before. Hopefully, I’ll be able to write well enough without major feedback changes.

This second artifact is the script planned to be used in my Digital Project #2. The script has gone through multiple changes and multiple reviews with my footage. This assignment helped me to solidify my speech during presentations and the like. I would include more supporting information if I was to do something similar in the future.

Goal 2 – Facilitates collaborators’ contributions by building upon their contributions and noticing when someone is not participating and inviting them to engage. 20%

This artifact is a collection of images from my Digital Project #3. This project is here to show how collaborating with my groupmates resulted in a finished product.

This group project was the biggest group project of the semester. And I definitely got more experience about working and collaborating effectively. I would definitely try to establish more structure in a future group so everyone is clear of what they need to do and how their part fits into the overall project.

Goal 3 – Evaluates texts’ scholarly significance to apply reading to other contexts or issues. 10%

This artifact is an image of the website of the walking tour I chose for my reflection #8. This specific walking tour and organization actually have ties to me and my family.

My sister currently in high school did dance for many years of her life and my family lives close to them. So I plan to show them this organization when I have the opportunity. This assignment showed me how far I should be looking around me for connections in other facets of my life. I plan to continue looking for how an assignment could tie into other things I’ve done.

Goal 4 – Uses clear organizational patterns and is skillful at presenting content cohesively. 25%

This artifact is a file from my Digital Project #3. It’s the document with our introduction slides. This part of the slides was originally a peer’s, but I’ve helped go through and get it more presentable and organized it so it introduced the rest of the project well.

This showed me how important it is to be able to see all of the parts of the problem. When I tried writing in an overview of the rest of the slides, I needed to know what was actually included in each slide. This gave me a sort of overview of the whole project and how it connects cohesively.

Goal 5 – Explores a topic in depth, yielding a rich awareness and/or little-known information indicating intense interest in the subject. 15%

This artifact is an image of a small business we visited during a trip out into the Tower Grove area for data collection for Digital Project #3. While out on this trip, my group stopped at this business and purchased some cookies.

We discovered a pretty good place for some inexpensive treats while doing work on something completely different. I will be keeping an eye out for things like this; a deeper awareness that leads to a nice treat.
