First-Week Introduction
For CODES 320 I hope to really polish up my research project so I can see some hard results in the near future. I want to receive more interactions between Cahokia community members so I can learn more about the area. I want to gather more responses for my survey, so I have more data to publish on my website. I also hope for the website to gain exposure and be known as a help-guide for residents in Cahokia.
Midterm Introduction
Now that we have reached the middle of the semester, I am feeling more confident in my role within this course. I have had a couple interactions with our community partner, and they have been enlightening conversations. Our community partner pointed us in the right direction as far as what else to add to our website. Currently I am being introduced to the new emplace website where we will be able to showcase our work that we do in CODES on a broader scale.
Final Introduction
My second year in CODES is coming to an end. Looking back, I am proud of what I have accomplished throughout this year. Starting this semester off I had a couple of loose ends in my project, but they are looking better now. With all of the time I spent in the Cahokia Public Library talking to the community, I now too somewhat feel a part of the Cahokia Heights community. We have been able to give a final product to our community partner, and I hope that one day that product is able to be used to help people in the Cahokia community.
Course Goals
Choose five goals from the CODES Student Learning Outcomes that you’d like to work toward. Choose goals that are relevant to the scope of this course, select artifacts/examples based on activities assigned for this course, and explain characteristics in a way that illustrates how your artifacts/examples demonstrate your progress toward the goal.
Goal 1 (20%) Collaboration: Helps collaboration move forward by articulating the merits of alternative ideas.
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| * Work within my research team to brainstorm ideas on our projects. * Dissemination plan | * Reflections on brainstorming sessions with my research group * Dissemination plan assignment | * Reflections should display my active collaboration within my team and helping support our process. * Dissemination plan should state my goals and how I plan on contributing to our final product. |

The first artifact is a screenshot from my group brainstorming journal I keep in my iPad. In this instance my research team and I were discussing how we should place the order of our different pieces within the emplace assignment. The 2nd artifact is my individual dissemination plan goal. For the emplace assignment we created a scrollytelling page that tells a story while reviewing our website. For my individual contribution I planned on articulating how the constant threats of home floods complicate the lives of Cahokia residents and displaying data from a survey. The third and fourth artifacts are two more entries from my group brainstorming journal. In these entries I reflect and take note about us collaborating and deciding each other’s roles for our projects.
Goal 2 (25%) Written Communication: Demonstrates a thorough understanding of context, audience, and purpose.
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| * Take in mind of who my audience is and what I want them to get out of my writing. | * Individual Emplace contribution * Reflections assignments | * Emplace contribution draft should show confidence in what I am discussing. *Reflection excerpts should be easy to follow. |

The first artifact is a screenshot of my section in my groups Cahokia Heights resource website. In this section I am introducing my piece on renter’s rights in Cahokia Heights and explaining why it is an important discussion in the area of Cahokia. The second artifact is another screenshot from the webpage in this section I am giving advice on what a tenant can do if they feel that their legal rights as a tenant are being violated. Our website’s purpose is to act as a resource for people either living in Cahokia Heights or future Cahokia residents. The third artifact is an entry from reflection #2. In this piece I am reflecting on how helpful one of our community partners have been throughout our project. I go into detail about how Arianna and the Cahokia Public Library were a detrimental part in my project. The fourth artifact is an entry from reflection #3. In this piece I am reflecting on why we as people may tend to have a negative feeling about receiving feedback. I also discuss my personal feelings towards feedback and how my feelings are often dependent on who is giving the feedback. The fifth artifact is an entry from reflection #1. In this piece I am reflecting on the challenges on finding secondary sources about Cahokia Heights’ water equity crisis because of how little it is known nationally. I compare it to the same issues that went on in Flint, Michigan which is a more nationally know crisis.
Goal 3 (10%) Ethical Reasoning: Applies ethical concepts to a question and considers their full implications.
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| * Analyze ethical issues that stem from housing practices in Cahokia Heights | * Excerpts from individual emplace contribution *Survey data analysis portion in my website | * Individual emplace contribution should be discussing the ethical concepts in housing practices * Data analysis should be questioning ethics in the relationship between a landlord and a tenant |

The first artifact is a screenshot of one of my scrollytelling pages in our emplace assignment. In this page I am discussing the practice of homeowners in Cahokia blatantly showing listing pictures that display unhabitual living situations in homes. The ethical concern in my page is the idea that homeowners do this and lower listing prices down because they know that most likely someone will have to buy or rent their home out because of the socioeconomic factors in the community. The second artifact is a screenshot of one of my pages on my research team’s website for Cahokia Heights resources. This page discusses open-response survey question data I received. I question the ethics behind the “under the table” agreements that some landlords have with their tenants. These agreements can often result in an abuse of power on behalf of the owner.
Goal 4 (25%) Skills for Lifelong Learning: Pursues knowledge and educational experience beyond the classroom.
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| * Continue to build my knowledge on the issues that pertain to water in Cahokia Heights | * Excerpts from professional bio * Individual contribution | * Excerpts from professional bio and individual contribution should display an above average knowledge level of my topic. |

The first artifact is an outline of what I planned on producing in my emplace contribution, followed by the second artifact which shows a zillow housing listing in Cahokia. The first artifact discusses landlords placing high prices on rent for homes that do not visually equate to the what the tenant is paying for. the second artifact is a home listing for 1200 dollars, and the pictures show boarded windows on the front of the home. The third artifact is my author bio. In my bio I give an overview of my project in CODES and in that overview, I go into detail on how contaminated water not only effects the health of the people who drink it, but also negatively impacts them financially and emotionally. The fourth artifact is a page from our scrollytelling emplace assignment. In this page I display my knowledge on the water equity crisis in Cahokia and the strains it takes on multiple factors of life. The fifth artifact is a screenshot of one of my pages in my research team’s website. In this page I display my knowledge on Illinois landlord-tenant law codes.
Goal 5 (20%) Quantitative Literacy: Skillfully represents quantitative information.
| What will you do to learn the content/ develop the skill? | What examples will you add to the portfolio to demonstrate your learning? | What characteristics of the chosen examples demonstrate you have met your goal? |
| * Make graphs that show numerical data from my renter’s rights survey | * I will add pictures of the different graphs I make on the group website | * The graphs should show clear numerical data that add up and is easy to understand. |

The four artifacts are pie charts from my landlord-tenant relationship survey section in my research team’s website. These pie charts display numerical data from the multiple-choice questions in the survey that I gave out to adults who rent homes in Cahokia Heights.
