First-Week Introduction

I chose five goals in the areas of collaboration, reading, problem-solving skills, information literacy, and written communication. I chose these particular goals because I think believe they are essential skills as a college student, especially in a program like CODES. Science has never been a strong subject for me in school, so I know that this course could possibly be a little challenging for me, but I am prepared for it.

Course Goals

Choose five goals from the CODES Student Learning Outcomes that you’d like to work toward. Choose goals that are relevant to the scope of this course, select artifacts/examples based on activities assigned for this course, and explain characteristics in a way that illustrates how your artifacts/examples demonstrate your progress toward the goal.

(25%) 12C Collaboration: Works independently toward goals by contributing and meeting deadlines.

The assignments above were all submitted by their respective due dates and received scores of at least 20/25. These assignments improve my time management skills because I had to make sure to have enough time to complete them in quality fashion by their due dates. I believe this skill will be beneficial for me after my academic career because collaboration happens not only in school, but also in many professional fields.

(25%) 12A Written communication: Demonstrates a thorough understanding of context, audience, and purpose.

The artifacts above our screenshots of grade reports on scientist spotlight reflections and jigsaw worksheets. I received an 100% proficiency grade on all of them. While completing these assignments I learned about different aspects of research methods and the importance of biodiversity and conservation. In jigsaw assignments we annotate research articles to trade information with other students who read different research articles. These practices helped me improve my written communication skills by pushing me to pay attention to how I relay information on paper.

(25%) 6A Intercultural Knowledge and Competence: Articulates own cultural rules and biases and recognizes and responds to biases.

Artifacts above are screenshots of reflections over Braiding Sweetgrass sections and a grade of a pop quiz over Braiding Sweetgrass. I scored over a 100% proficiency on all of the artifacts. The book Braiding Sweetgrass discusses heavily about indigenous cultures and their practices involving nature. Often while reading the book, I compare my own culture to indigenous cultures and their practices and values. Learning about cultures much different than mine is interesting and I believe essential in being an effective collaborator in an environment with many different people from many different backgrounds.

(25%) 1A Civic Engagement: Demonstrates ability and commitment to collaboratively work across and within community contexts and structures.
