Reflection 4

Posted on March 23, 2026 by zmedina

I am currently working on a brochure that will be passed around at our conservation event and pass around on campus in general. The brochure is based on a tagging monarch event hosted by Heartlands Conservancy that I attended to conduct interviews for my group project. The brochure has information on the event, pictures of the event, and information about CODES and Heartland Conservancy. The purpose for making the brochure is to bring more awareness on what conservation is and to bring attention to our sponsor Heartlands Conservancy and CODES in general. I would like my brochure to illustrate what conservation is and how it can affect our world if we don’t take it seriously. I would also like to show how fun the activities are. There will be information about the event and how it’s useful to participate in these events. This will shape my work moving forward because it will allow me to show the pros and cons about today’s society rate of conserving.  This will be important in my work going forward because it will help me understand how to communicate important environmental issues in a way that is not only engaging, but also accessible to a broad audience. Creating this brochure has taught me the value of using visual aids in combination with clear, concise information in a way that can be quickly digested by a reader in order to understand the importance of conservation. It also makes me realize the value of audience awareness, or what will grab their attention, what will make them want to read on, and what will make them act. Through this project, I have been able skill in taking real-life experiences, like the monarch tagging event, and turning them into something meaningful. I have not just been learning how to report on what is happening, but I have also been learning how to focus on important events and explain their importance to others. This is important, especially when it comes to organizations like Heartlands Conservancy and CODES, where I have to create enough interest in what they are doing. Going forward, I would like to use these skills in future projects by focusing more on storytelling and design. I want my projects not only to inform people but also leave a mark that will urge them to get involved. This experience has also made me more mindful of the power of small actions, like attending an event or passing information, as a means of contributing to a bigger picture. Overall, this brochure is more than just an assignment. It is an opportunity to practice being an advocate in terms of design and communication. It has helped me grow as a creator and a communicator, and I think it will have an impact on how I complete future assignments like this one.
